My puppy has parvo. How long for recovery and what are survival odds?

I'm sorry to hear that Cooper has parvo! You did the right thing by taking him to the vet as soon as you noticed a problem. I'm glad he's currently hospitalized for treatment. It takes about a week or so for the infection to run its course. Ace may shed virus for weeks afterwards. A good percentage of puppies that survive the first 3 or 4 days of infection usually recover. Without a physical exam, we cannot say if he is recovering or not. Continue to medicate him as directed by your veterinarian. Make sure Ace is eating and drinking. You can offer unflavored PediaLyte or your vet can show you how to administer subcutaneous fluids. Be sure to sanitize or discard bedding, toys, bowls, etc. Keep him isolated from other unvaccinated puppies.

A 3 month old puppy can survive parvo virus but it usually takes veterinary care to prevent dehydration from the vomiting and diarrhea. Most dogs with parvo require intravenous fluids, anti-vomiting medications, antibiotics, and other medications to treat. He should be examined and treated by a vet, if possible, to confirm the diagnosis and treat. The prognosis without veterinary care is not good, especially if he has severe vomiting and diarrhea.

It can survive, but parvo is a very deadly disease so there is a good chance the dog can die. To have the best chance of survival, your dog does need to be hospitalized. Parvovirus treatment consists of aggressive supportive care to control the symptoms and boost your dog’s immune system to help him win the battle against this dangerous disease. I am sorry to hear that Brutus has Parvo virus.this can be quite a difficult infection to fight off for most puppies but it is possible to recover from parvo virus. Hydration is key, as dehydration can set in quickly from the severe diarrhea. Antibiotic therapy and any vomiting medications also help. Providing adequate nutrition is important as well as malnourishment can make recovery more difficult. There was a study published by Colorado State University on parvo treatment at home that showed at home treatments were quite effective. I would ensure that you have spoken to your vet about all of the home treatment options so that you can get him on the road to recovery sooner rather than later. Thanks for using PetCoach. Depending on the severity of the couse of disease, it can take some puppies several weeks to fully recover. Be sure to feed the food her vet recommends and offer small amounts of food frequently. Do not allow her to eat all she wants at one time. Zoe may be contagious to other puppies for up to 3-4 weeks so should be kept away from other dogs and pups. Depending on how she is doing the vet may recommend vaccination anywhere from 1-3 weeks after she starts eating. She cannot contract Parvo again but does need to be vaccinated against other diseases. It sounds like your puppy is extremely sick, and parvovirus can take a few weeks for a dog to fully recover. It's very concerning he is not drinking as dehydration is the number one cause of death in these animals. He should see a vet again immediately, please take him into one now. Best of luck.
