My 6-month-old puppy has parvo. What are his survival chances?

It can take 1-2 weeks to recover from parvo, and it is probably encouraging that Frank is not worse at this point. Even when you are careful about potential exposure and when you follow the recommended vaccine protocol sometimes puppies will still become infected with the virus. While I can’t say the exact odds without knowing more details about his lab values and physical exam, some studies have shown a 90% success rate with inpatient treatment in a hospital and the longer he goes without developing life threatening complications the better his prognosis is.

I am sorry to hear that Josie is sick! But happy you have her under veterinary care. Luckily with aggressive treatment puppies usually have an 80-90% survival rate with this disease. We don't have a breakdown of statistics of survival rates with puppies showing differing symptoms (those having vomiting vs. those not) but in general, the less ill a puppy is the more likely the chance of survival and also a faster recovery/shorter hospital stay. A 3 month old puppy can survive parvo virus but it usually takes veterinary care to prevent dehydration from the vomiting and diarrhea. Most dogs with parvo require intravenous fluids, anti-vomiting medications, antibiotics, and other medications to treat. He should be examined and treated by a vet, if possible, to confirm the diagnosis and treat. The prognosis without veterinary care is not good, especially if he has severe vomiting and diarrhea.

It can survive, but parvo is a very deadly disease so there is a good chance the dog can die. To have the best chance of survival, your dog does need to be hospitalized. Parvovirus treatment consists of aggressive supportive care to control the symptoms and boost your dog’s immune system to help him win the battle against this dangerous disease. Dogs infected with parvovirus need intensive treatment in a veterinary hospital, where they receive antibiotics, drugs to control the vomiting, intravenous fluids and other supportive therapies. Hello. Please, please, please, see your veterinarian. Your older pup has a good chance of survival with the right treatment. This does not automatically mean hospitalization, many of these pups can be treated at home with the right instructions, medications, fluids, etc. But you do want to have the pup examined so that you know what you need to do at home. It sounds like he is doing very well soo far. His chances of survival are good/favorable. If he is eating and no vomiting, then he can likely come home now to continue his treatment with you as he continues to recover from parvo. Bloody diarrhea does happen with parvovirus infections as the virus destroys the healthy protective lining of the intestines and that causes blood to come inside the intestinal track. Protein loss and anemia can occur because of this which can cause a domino effect of problems with dogs battling Parvovirus. It is difficult to predict what the prognosis will be with Awesome, sight unseen. However, I can tell you prognosis does depend on whether the infection was diagnosed early or not, how old the dog was at the time of diagnosis, and level of treatment. Older puppies that have been diagnosed early and undergoing aggressive treatment have a much better prognosis. I hope this has helped and I wish Awesome a speedy recovery!
