Why is my new puppy lethargic, wobbly, and has bloody diarrhea?

Although trauma is possible, a viral, parasitic or bacterial gastroenteritis would also be possible. Monitor closely for any additional signs or symptoms and contact your vet immediately if any further pups are affected or if any vomiting develops. Be sure to keep up to date with deworming medications and vaccines also

Poor precious. Make sure she is eating about 5-6 small meals a day to help keep her blood sugar up. Since she is having vomiting and diarrhea I would really concerned about her getting dehydrated and weak. She could have something serious going on like parvo virus or a lot of intestinal parasites. I would strongly recommend to get her in to see your vet as soon as possible so they can test her for parvo and worms. They will be able to make sure she has the appropriate medicine to make her feel better and make sure she isn't getting dehydrated.

I do not recommend Blue Buffalo diets at all. I think they are too rich, especially for a young puppy. Also Blue Buffalo does not follow AAFCO standards (nutritional guidelines). So, I don't think their food is properly balanced. All they do well is marketing. Just because it is expensive doesn't make it better. If I were you I would find another food that uses AAFCO guidelines. It will tell you on the bag where the nutritional information is. If you could call the shelter where you got her and ask what they were feeding that would be helpful. The other thing I would do is feed a probiotic as that will help repopulate the GI tract with good bacteria. Hope this helps! Best wishes!

This falls into one of these categories since you say that he isn't acting sick- Any clinical sign (diarrhea) that persists, worsens, or other signs develop (nausea, vomiting, lethargy, etc) this indicates that Colby should be seen by your veterinarian to assess what is going on. So I would just monitor his stools over the next 6-12 hours and watch for other signs. If things worsen, signs persist, or new signs develop, take him in immediately and let your vet take a detailed history and do a physical exam. They may advise some tests which could include fecal/blood tests, x-rays, etc to determine if a problem is present. A treatment plan can be made once a cause is determined or suspected. Bloody diarrhea can be caused by many things including intestinal worms, dietary problems, dietary indiscretion (eating things a dog should not eat), exposure to a toxin by ingestion, infection, etc. Good luck with Colby.

Hi there! Sorry to hear that she is not feeling well. The clinical signs you describe are concerning when they occur in a puppy as they can be seen with serious gastrointestinal infections such as Parvovirus. Other possibilities include intestinal worms and dietary indiscretion, among other possibilities. The sooner these conditions are treated the better the outcome tends to be. For this reason, I recommend that you have her evaluated by your veterinarian to check for these possibilities and to start therapy based on findings. I would be very suspicious that your puppy may have contracted parvovirus. Please take her in to your local vet right away to get tested for parvovirus and also a fecal exam. If she has parvo she will need medicaitons from your vet, fluids and possible extensive care to get treat her conditon. Parvo is a very deadly virus in puppies even with treatment, but the pet has the best chance of survival the earlier you start treatment. Try offering her small amounts of Pedialyte non-flavored by mouth via syringe or small turkey baster to try and keep her hydrated. Puppies dehydrate very quickly when they are having loose stool. Poor Luna! She could have an infection (parvo, etc) or a parasite. Since she has bloody stool and is lethargic, she should be examined by a vet to determine the cause and treat. Your vet can test a stool sample to help diagnose and then prescribe medications to treat the problem. She might also need some fluids to prevent dehydration. Hope she gets better soon!
