My puppy has bloody diarrhea but isn't lethargic. What's wrong?

This blood in his diarrhea could be due to intestinal worms, eating something rotten, a foreign body, parvo if he isn't vaccinated, or a severe stomach illness. He should definitely see a vet for this. As long as he is otherwise ok, it can wait until the morning. If he starts vomiting, has more bloody diarrhea, is very lethargic, stops drinking water, or is vomiting water, take him into an ER vet immediately. I hope this helps!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor guy! If he is otherwise ok then he should be fine until the morning. It isn't uncommon for blood to appear in diarrhea. It indicates inflammation in the colon. Causes of diarrhea are: intestinal parasites (so bring fresh stool sample), viral or bacterial infections, dietary indiscretion (ate something gross), HGE (hemorrhagic gastro-enteritis), pancreatitis, food allergy or intolerance, reaction to a new treat/food/table food. Having severe diarrhea like Beckett seems to be having can be very painful and uncomfortable. This may be why he is more lethargic than normal and why his stomach seems tense/contracted. It is great news that he doesn't have Parvo! Hopefully in addition to the antibiotics your vet also dewormed Beckett, as puppies often have intestinal parasites. If Beckett stops eating, begins vomiting, or the diarrhea isn't improving after about 48 hours of being on the medication I would recommend bringing him back to the vet to be reevaluated. Sometimes with severe diarrhea these little puppies can become dehydrated and need additional treatment like fluid therapy. Good luck!

The clinical signs you describe are concerning when they occur in a puppy as they can be seen with serious gastrointestinal infections such as Parvovirus. Other possibilities include intestinal worms and dietary indiscretion, among other possibilities. The sooner these conditions are treated the better the outcome tends to be. For this reason, I recommend that you have Bruno evaluated by your veterinarian to check for these possibilities and to start therapy based on findings. These signs could be compatible with a colitis, which is an inflammation of the last part of the intestine, the colon, usually related to dietary indiscretion. As a first approach, I would suggest to start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days. A probiotic would help as well to speed up the recovery and re-establish normal bacterial flora. Pro-kolin could be a good option. I would definitely recommend a veterinary check up if the signs persist or you notice vomiting, lethargy or inappetence. I am very sorry to hear that Theodore is experiencing these problems, I am sure it is very unsettling for you both. There are a number of potential causes of such clinical signs, including dietary indiscretion, pancreatitis, parasite infestation, infection, and ingestion of a toxin or poison. In young puppies eating something they shouldn’t have and gastrointestinal worms are very common. If you haven’t done a de-worming treatment with Theodore yet it would be a good idea to. Broad spectrum puppy safe dewormers are available at most pet stores and at your local veterinarian. Because you have only noticed these signs over the course of a few hours I would continue to monitor Theordore at home. Here is what you can do for him; Rest his gastrointestinal tract by holding back food for a few hours. Then you can continue with a bland and easily digested food of the boiled chicken breast and white rice diet and provide plenty of fresh water. I also find that boiled, mashed skinless sweet potato is helpful for diarrhoea. If Theodore does not improve, has profuse vomiting or diarrhoea, you notice more fresh blood, He seems lethargic, in pain or depressed I would advise a trip to the veterinarian immediately. Oh no poor guy. As long as he isn't lethargic, doesn't have pale gums or is otherwise stable, you can wait the 5 hrs to get him seen. He may be having a stress colitis, in which case antibiotics and probiotics along with a bland diet are the treatment recommendations. However the vet will want to examine him thoroughly so that he is treated appropriately. I hope Boone feels better soon. Best wishes and take care.
