Why is my 3-month-old puppy having bloody diarrhea and sleeping a lot?

Blue Buffalo is not a good food despite what all their marketing ads tell you. You will find very few vets that think it's a good choice. She would be better off back on Purina and I'd suggest the Pro Plan Puppy for large breed dogs. I think you should switch her back slowly to the Purina. It is typical for dogs to poop a lot of Blue Buffalo as they don't really seem to absorb/digest much of it. Poor Addison! This could be caused by several things from large water intake, parasites, or even her dog food. Blue buffalo can actually be too rich for some dogs. I have also seen other complications from eating blue buffalo like bladder crystals and bladder stones. You some consider switching her to something With less protein like science diet, Royal canin, or Iams. If you want a food with a more “natural” approach, natural balance is also a good choice. When you switch her, I would slowly mix in the new food and gradually transition her over a 10 to 14 day period. Also, I would have your vet take a look at her. Your vet will be able to do a fecal to check for worms. I would make sure they also check for giardia and campylobacter as these are parasites/bacteria that commonly can cause similar issues but are difficult to diagnose. Lastly, i would get her started on some probiotics. I like ones made by vetriscience and Thorne. I hope this helps and she starts to feel better.

I am so sorry to hear that Lady has such a rough start in life. She seems to have found a happy home now. I would continue to feed her a high quality puppy food , I suggest one do the three veterinary approved brands; hills science diet, purine pro plan or royal canin. In addition I would have her given a worming treatment. Gastrointestinal worms are very common in young puppies and probably is the cause of her lack of energy, diarrhoea and bloody feces. If you take Lady in for her first set of vaccinations the vet will be able to send you home with a worming treatment. Best of luck with Lady. I believe she will do fine after some vaccines and worming treatment. She may also need time to adjust to your home and feel secure. Extra love and attention can help her feel more secure faster.

Poor precious. Make sure she is eating about 5-6 small meals a day to help keep her blood sugar up. Since she is having vomiting and diarrhea I would really concerned about her getting dehydrated and weak. She could have something serious going on like parvo virus or a lot of intestinal parasites. I would strongly recommend to get her in to see your vet as soon as possible so they can test her for parvo and worms. They will be able to make sure she has the appropriate medicine to make her feel better and make sure she isn't getting dehydrated.

It is possible it is the raw food diet diet causing Charley's bloody diarrhea. That's because raw meat carries bacteria that can make your dog sick. It could also be due to intestinal parasites, so make sure she is up to date on her deworming treatments. Withhold food for 12 to 24 hours then feed her a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in a commercial dry dog food for her. I would recommend feeding the commercial day dog food diet to her because there is no risk of poisoning from bacteria, either to her or you. If Charley isn't fully vaccinated, there is a chance she could have parvovirus, but given that she is happy and energetic, it's more likely related to her diet. If she does become very lethargic or the bland diet doesn't help the diarrhea, I would take her into the vet.

The clinical signs you describe are concerning when they occur in a puppy as they can be seen with serious gastrointestinal infections such as Parvovirus. Other possibilities include intestinal worms and dietary indiscretion, among other possibilities. The sooner these conditions are treated the better the outcome tends to be. For this reason, I recommend that you have Bruno evaluated by your veterinarian to check for these possibilities and to start therapy based on findings. I'm sorry Hulk has been having problems with soft stool! It could be that his diet was causing the diarrhea, but it could also be that he had a GI illness or ate something rotten. It's good that the bland diet has helped clear it up, and I would find another food to feed him besides Blue Buffalo. I am not a fan at all of it, there are many cases of dogs having GI issues on it. It also have very poor quality control over how it is made, and they have had a number of recalls. Brands of food I recommend include Royal Canin, Hill's Science Diet, Purina ProPlan, and Iams. You can get his used to one of these new brands by slowly adding it to the bland diet, and over time, increasing the amount of the new food and decreasing the bland diet until he is eating the bland diet only.
