My 5-month puppy has a honking cough and peeing indoors. What's wrong?

A hacking cough can be a sign of allergies or a collapsing trachea, and it would be a good idea to mention it to your vet during your next visit. As long as it continues to happen infrequently and Lucky is not having difficulty breathing I probably wouldn’t make an appointment now. If this urination habit is new however I’d worry that it might be a sign of a urinary issue. If it seems like he is continuing to urinate small amounts frequently or if you see him attempting to urinate without passing anything you should make an appointment to see your vet.

This is likely what is going on with Hazel. She needs to be seen by your local vet for a urinalysis (urine test) and oral antibiotics if confirmed. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Cashew. I recommend having him neutered. He is coming into puberty which is why he had started the urine marking behavior. Neutering him will help to resolve this behavior. It will take about 30 days after the surgery for the testosterone to leave his system. It may not resolve the problem entirely as it can become a learned behavior, but it should decrease it significantly. I hope this information helps!

I’m sorry to hear about Bruno! I am concerned that he might have developed a urinary tract infection. There is one medication (prednisone/prednisolone) they can caused increased urination and drinking but those should stop as soon as the medication was stopped. The UTI may be even more likely if he’s recently hurt his back or neck because they tend not to posture/squat all the way or for long enough when it hurts. So they hold their urine longer than they might otherwise do or don’t empty their bladder fully. These can predispose to UTI. Take Bruno (and a urine sample if you can catch one) in to the vet to do a urine test and get on antibiotics if that’s what it turns out to be. The urine test will also screen for other causes of accidents like diabetes and kidney disease. Hope this helps and best of luck to you and Bruno!

14 weeks is very young to be fully house trained. The best thing to do is have a urine sample checked by your vet. If there is an infection then it can cause these symptoms and you will need antibiotics to fix this. If there urine is normal, then it is just behavioral and training problems associated with his age.

Cujo is such a cutie. Congrats on adopting an adult dog!! If this was a one time event, I would just monitor him. He definitely could just be getting used to his new house and routine. However, if he has any further accidents, if he starts asking to go outside to urinate more frequently, if he strains to urinate at all, or if there is any blood in his urine , I would have him evaluated by a veterinarian right away. They will do a urinalysis to screen for an infection likely and may do other tests based on results such as x-rays to look for bladder stones.
