Why is my potty-trained dog suddenly peeing more and having accidents?

Poor Mickey! A sudden change in urinary habits most commonly indicates a medical issue rather than a behavioral change. Possible causes of his urinary accidents could be due to bladder issues (urinary tract infection, crystals), prostate enlargement (if he was neutered later in life), endocrine/metabolic conditions (Cushing's disease, diabetes) or organ dysfunction (kidney disease or liver disease). I realize that this is a very broad list of possible issues, so try to determine if Mickey has been drinking more, urinating a larger volume, urinating a normal volume but more frequently, experiencing changes in his appetite or in his overall energy level. All of these different behaviors can help to narrow down possible underlying issues behind his accidents. At this point, I do recommend taking Mickey to his vet for an exam and lab testing (CBC, chemistry, urinalysis to start) to treat the issue at hand. I hope that all goes well!

Hi and thanks for your post on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Yes, this can be normal after neutering surgery. It has to do with the drop in hormone levels after the surgery and that has some effect on bladder control. Fortunately, this can be treated with medication if the accidents continue and do not get better. You may wan to visit with your veterinarian soon regarding medication if he does not improve soon. I am sorry to hear about your dog! The first step is to have your vet examine him to be sure there isn't a medical reason for this new issue. There are a multitude of issues that can cause urinary accidents, including urinary tract infection, bladder stones, kidney disease, diabetes, and more. If the vet rules out a medical cause you can discuss if this is an anxiety issue or a loss of potty training. Anxiety is sometimes treated with oral medications. In mild cases a pheremone product like the Adaptil collar or diffuser (available online and at some pet stores or vet offices), thundershirts (also online and at stores), and oral supplements like Composure and Zylkene. Inappropriate urination can be due to many different factors including: - urinary tract infections - urinary bladder inflammation (cystitis) which can be due to stress - urinary stones - diabetes - cushing's disease - hypothyroidism - pyometra (not related to Pongo because this only occurs in females) - behavioural I recommend having Pongo seen by your vet, and they will likely check a urine sample to look for stones. Dalmations are very prone to a certain type of stone, so this is the most likely cause. Pongo might be at risk of a urethral blockage (can be fatal) if stones are present and get stuck in the urethra, so getting this diagnosed early is important. I recommend a visit to the vet when they are open for a urine check, and possible x-rays or ultrasound. Not all stones show up on x-rays. Best of luck with Pongo!

She may have a urinary infection that causes her to have accidents due to not being able to hold it as Kong. She may be doing this out of stress or anxiety or something has changed in her environment or routine. Depending on where she is in her heat cycle it may be due to marking and territorial problems influenced by hormones The best place to start is gave your vet check for infection with the urine then look in to getting her fixed. From there you can look into repeating house training or behavioral medicines

14 weeks is very young to be fully house trained. The best thing to do is have a urine sample checked by your vet. If there is an infection then it can cause these symptoms and you will need antibiotics to fix this. If there urine is normal, then it is just behavioral and training problems associated with his age.

In that case, I would recommend taking him to the vet for a check-up. He/she can do blood work and a urinalysis to help diagnose the problem and get him started on appropriate treatment.
