My house-trained adopted dog peed inside. Is it UTI or stress?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It is possible that she could have a Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) but that wouldn't explain the stool. I think she isn't house trained. I would block her access to the room she is going in and all other rooms. She should be leash walked every 1-2 hours so you know she is actually going outside. When she goes give her treats, verbal praise and play with her outside for 10 mins. If she doesn't go she should be crated if you can not keep her leashed to you. Then try again. She has to be either crated or leashed to an adult at all times until there are no accidents for 3 months. This includes when you are gone and asleep. All rooms need to be closed and/or gated off. No negative punishment for accidents. All areas that have been soiled need to be cleaned with an enzymatic pet cleaner like Nature's Miracle. You can also teach her during these 3 months how to ring a bell to indicate she has to go out. Teaching an adult dog to not eliminate in the house is much harder than a puppy especially with out knowing her full back ground. i wish you the best

A UTI is always possible, and it's always best to bring him to the vet or bring in a sample of his urine in for testing if you suspect that may be the case and to rule out any more serious health issues. Stress and anxiety (especially if the storms are bringing thunder) may also be causing him to hide or not want to go outside. Looking into something such as a thundershirt, playing a soothing radio station or talk show, distracting with treats or puzzle toys, and taking him out when there are breaks in the storm may all help him relax a bit. If he is very distraught, talking with your vet to see if medication to help him relax would be useful is another option. The accidents could just be secondary to change in environment and stress. You could keep them in crates while you aren't home and then monitor them closely while you are home. Keep them in the same room as you and don't let them roam your house without supervision. Take them outside frequently and give them praise and treats when they go to the bathroom outside. If you are still having problems in a week or so then they may not have been fully house trained.

Poor Riley (and you!)! Riley could be urinating in the house because of a medical issue, such as a urinary tract infection, crystals in the urine or bladder stones. Behavioral stressors, such as a change in her normal routine, can trigger inappropriate urination in some pets. As a first step, Riley should be seen by her vet and have a urinalysis performed to check for the presence of infection and crystals. A urinary tract infection requires antibiotics and crystals may require a diet change. If medical issues are ruled out, consider using a calming pheromone diffuser or collar (Adaptil is one example).

I am so very sorry to hear that you and Caesar had to go through this. It would have been upsetting for him to be left in the cage for so long. Because you are only noticing accidents, and no other changes at the moment. I would suggest that the issue is stress or anxiety related. I am sure Caesar needs time to return to his normal self and feel safe and secure again. I would try to help him feel more secure by spending extra time with him, extra cuddles and attention and extra walks together. If you continue to notice accidents over the next couple of days, if he has vomiting or diarrhoea, increased thirst, seems depressed or down I would take him in to see his vet. There could be an underlaying medical cause for the accidents such as a urinary tract infection, however, these are relatively rare in male dogs. Yes, you sure try the turf product. Works well for many people. If he already had a UTI at such a young age I would be worried it has recurred or it was never completely resolved (not sure how long ago it was). There could also be a different underlying medical issue. If the turf does not help you should have him back to the vet for a follow-up. This could be a behavioral issues especially if it occurred right after adopting your dog, but it could still be a medical problem. I would recommend taking Comet to a veterinarian and have them get a urine to rule out any type of infection. There are also systemic diseases (kidney disease and diabetes) that can cause an increase in urination which can present as inappropriate urination. It may also be something called Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease which can be brought on by stress. This can create inflammation in the bladder and the urethra, it can cause bladder stones and even UTI. Depending on what the veterinarian finds would depend on treatment. They may do a trial of antibiotics, they may change Comet's food or they may even prescribe medication to help with Comet's stresses from having a new housemate.
