Is garlic or onion safe for young puppies? What can they eat?

Look at the ingredients on the Gerber food. Make sure there are no onions, garlic, leeks or other vegetables in the same family as these. Yes, you can feed some vegetables in small amounts. Asparagus, Bell peppers (red, green, yellow), Broccoli, Carrots, Cauliflower, Celery, Cucumber, Green beans, Pumpkin, Sweet potato are all fine to feed to a dog. Do not feed anything with onions or garlic as they can both be toxic to dogs.

You're correct in that both onions and garlic are toxic to dogs, but I wouldn't worry at all about the negligible amount that your dog is getting. At 50 pounds, she would need to eat about 4 teaspoons of onion powder in order to experience the blood cell changes associated with onion toxicosis. I can't imagine that that much onion powder would be in a quart or so of the broth, let alone 1/4 cup. With that said, I generally err on the side of caution and prefer avoiding feeding both onions and garlic whenever possible. I don't like it for adult dogs because unless a veterinary nutritionist is balancing the food appropriately you are at risk of causing problems. You have to be sure the diet has the correct calcium/phosphorus ratio and has sufficient amounts of certain amino acids, for example taurine. A diet that doesn't have appropriate levels of taurine can cause heart disease and heart failure in animals. Commercial diets are the best thing to feed your pets. This may result though in gastrointestinal upset. Watch your pup for symptoms consistent with gastrointestinal upset such as vomiting, inappetence and/or diarrhea.
