My dog ate chicken broth with a little onion powder. Is she safe?

My 3 year old hound mix (she’s 50lbs) has had some onion powder in the chicken broth we have given her. I don’t put more than a 1/4 cup in it (most of the times less) and in some instances I’ve put water in the food as well because I heated up the food too much. She has not had any signs or symptoms of toxicity, but I want to make sure she will be okay. We have had her for a little over a week, 2 meals a day

You're correct in that both onions and garlic are toxic to dogs, but I wouldn't worry at all about the negligible amount that your dog is getting. At 50 pounds, she would need to eat about 4 teaspoons of onion powder in order to experience the blood cell changes associated with onion toxicosis. I can't imagine that that much onion powder would be in a quart or so of the broth, let alone 1/4 cup. With that said, I generally err on the side of caution and prefer avoiding feeding both onions and garlic whenever possible. Again, the tiny amount she's receiving in this chicken broth shouldn't cause any problems whatsoever. I hope this helps and that everything goes well!

    Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It was just a small amount of broth as it sounds like and really the amount of onion powder is really small so she will most likely be just fine. There is always the possibility of toxicosis but in Bella Love's case I think is unlikely given the likely very small amount consumed. Keep a close eye on her for the next 2-3 days to ensure that she does not develop loss of appetite or that her gums are pale as onion toxicosis can result in anemia. I think the monitoring approach would be appropriate for her. Good luck and have a great day!

    Hello. No, you have no worries. It actually takes quite a bit of inion to make a dog sick, or a dog would have to eat smaller amounts of onion for days on end to make a difference. So no worries, Jesse will be fine. Thanks for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.

Onions can be bad but broth is diluted with other flavors so there is not enough in that amount to be a problem. Chicken broth is a better alternative to use. You can also try baby food as it has more flavors!

If you gave her just a small amount she should be fine, but don't give it to her anymore, she doesn't need her food moisturized at all unless she has teeth disease (in that case she needs to be on canned food only).

Is chicken broth cooked with onion or garlic safe for my dog to drink?
It is not recommended. Even though the onions are garlic are cooked they can still be toxic to your dog. If you want to feed chicken broth just make it plain with low sodium; nothing else added. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

No, she will not die. These kind of powders contain small quantity of onion and garlic, usually way below toxic dose for dogs. So, your Xena may develop mild gastroenteritis (maybe a vomit and/or loose stools) but otherwise she will not get into any serious problems.

This may result though in gastrointestinal upset. Watch your pup for symptoms consistent with gastrointestinal upset such as vomiting, inappetence and/or diarrhea. My dog ate a beef stock cube with onion powder. Is it toxic?
A large breed dog would need to ingest about 2 tsp of onino powder for it to be considered toxic. If there is this much in the beef stock pot cube, then I would air on the side of caution and get Treacle seen by your vet asap. Symptoms of onion toxicity are: Depression, inappetence, tachypnea, tachycardia, weakness, exercise intolerance, icterus, and red to brown colored urine may occur. I hope that Treacle didn't ingest that much. If you are having a hard time figuring out how much is in hte pot cube, then repost your question with the ingredients list and serving size, we may be able to figure this out for you. Is onion extract in dog broth safe for my puppy to eat daily?
Hello. It would be almost impossible to say how much onion extract is actually present in the broth. That being said, since it is the last ingredient & the broth ( which I use ) does not have a strong onion smell or taste, it is probably a very small amount. I would, however, not recommend giving this to your pet on a daily basis. Once in a while is fine, but a little onion extract daily MIGHT cause a problem. If you want to supplement Shawn's diet with broth every day, then go the homemade route & leave out any onions. Then you will also have some delicious chicken for treats or salad left over for you.
