My puppy drinks a lot, pees often, and smells sweet. Is this normal?

Some puppies are just fascinated by water and drink constantly regardless of thirst. The 25 ounces is about double what Wallace needs per day, dog’s typically drink 1-2 ounces per pound. He will pee constantly if he’s drinking that much. He may also be losing sodium in the urine causing him to want to lick sweaty people to get additional salt. That much drinking and urine are not normal and could be a sign of kidney disease. I recommend a veterinary exam and blood work to check his kidney function and check for diabetes which also could cause these signs. Early diagnosis of a medical problem will help get him the proper treatment if needed and could prevent progesssion of the disease. Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I wouldn't withhold water from Chester as this could lead to dehydration in a young puppy. His drinking and urinating sound like it may be normal for a puppy his age but to be entirely sure you may want to take home to a veterinarian to have his urine checked. A puppy his age cannot hold his urine very long so I suspect he is having accidents because he physically cannot hold it that long.

I would not worry too much about having so many bowel movements, this is quite normal for a puppy. Drinking a lot may also be normal depending on his food. Measure the amount of water he drinks. If he drinks more than 100cc /24 hrs, it might be a good idea to take him to the vet for a wellness exam.

If she is having small frequent accidents in the house and going frequently outside with straining and small amount that is not normal. If it is larger amounts in the house if could be a lapse in house training. If the above applies of increased frequency, urgency and straining Gracy may have a UTI. I recommend having her seen by your Vet and bringing a urine sample to have it checked for bacteria. We treat UTIs with antibiotics. I hope this helps and I wish Gracy a speedy recovery!

His urine is very dilute from drinking lots of water. If he had a problem with his kidneys, you could see blood in his urine, peeing multiple times but in small amounts, lethargy, and possibly a loss of appetite. I hope this helps!
