Why is my new 9-week-old Labrador puppy drinking and peeing so much?

Oh Chester! It sounds like he is not emptying his bladder when he pees. I would take him on a leash to his potty area and give him a command like "go potty", wait 10-15 minutes for him to go. If he goes right away, great, but I would wait another 10-15 minutes to make sure he empties his bladder. Continue to take him out when he wakes up, after he eats, when hes doing playing and before bed. Keep him near you at all times so you can catch him before he has an accident. Give him lots of praise when he potties when he's told. Also set up a daily routine so he understands when to go. This is going to take time, patience, and repetition. Some puppies are just fascinated by water and drink constantly regardless of thirst. The 25 ounces is about double what Wallace needs per day, dog’s typically drink 1-2 ounces per pound. You should have him seen by a vet to rule out a UTI, kidney disease, or very rare forms of diabetes. I hope this helps and am happy to answer any other questions you have!

Hello. Jack Jack should definitely not be urinating every 30 minutes. This could be a physical problem, or he has some kind of psychological issue, especially if he is drinking more than a normal amount of water. I think it would be a good idea to see if his kidneys are OK & that he does not have any other issues with holding his urine. At the very least, he should be able to hold his urine a minimum of 4-6 hours at this age. Hopefully, he will be fine & he will outgrow this behavior, but I would recommend making sure there is not a medical reason for such frequent outings. If it's a small bowl, then yes this amount of water may be normal. He's a young puppy, so he won't be able to hold his bladder as long, and if he's drinking a lot of water, this amount of urination may also be normal. If he has a large water bowl and you are filling it this often, then this is not normal and may be a sign of a problem. In that case, have him seen by a vet. I'm not sure how to explain the sweet smell, have that checked out by a vet as well. I hope this helps!

It's normal for puppies to have very clear, dilute urine because their kidneys are still developing. They can also get urinary tract infections and other issues as well. I would recommend scheduling a vet visit (or telling them you want to talk about this issue when you schedule his next vaccine appointment) and using a small tuberware to catch his first urination of the morning to bring to that appointment. They can check to see how concentrated his urine is. Keep the urine in the fridge if it's going to be more than 30-60 minutes until your appointment. Good luck!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Puppies do urinate more frequently than adults. If this is a change in urination than it is not normal. If she is having small frequent accidents in the house and going frequently outside with straining and small amount that is not normal. If it is larger amounts in the house if could be a lapse in house training. If the above applies of increased frequency, urgency and straining Gracy may have a UTI. I recommend having her seen by your Vet and bringing a urine sample to have it checked for bacteria. We treat UTIs with antibiotics. I hope this helps and I wish Gracy a speedy recovery!
