My 10-week puppy drinks a lot and poops often. Should I see a vet?

If it's a small bowl, then yes this amount of water may be normal. He's a young puppy, so he won't be able to hold his bladder as long, and if he's drinking a lot of water, this amount of urination may also be normal. If he has a large water bowl and you are filling it this often, then this is not normal and may be a sign of a problem. In that case, have him seen by a vet. I'm not sure how to explain the sweet smell, have that checked out by a vet as well. I hope this helps!

Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I wouldn't withhold water from Chester as this could lead to dehydration in a young puppy. His drinking and urinating sound like it may be normal for a puppy his age but to be entirely sure you may want to take home to a veterinarian to have his urine checked. A puppy his age cannot hold his urine very long so I suspect he is having accidents because he physically cannot hold it that long.

If this is a one time thing I wouldn’t be too concerned, but if Toothless is urinating more frequently throughout the day, if he is straining to urinate, or if he seems to be drinking a lot more water as well you should see your veterinarian.

This does not sound normal. A puppy should not be urinating or defecating that many times in 30 minutes. I would suspect intestinal parasites or some type of infection but I cannot tell you for sure just based on your description. I would suggest you take the puppy to a vet for an exam.

Some puppies are just fascinated by water and drink constantly regardless of thirst. The 25 ounces is about double what Wallace needs per day, dog’s typically drink 1-2 ounces per pound. You should have him seen by a vet to rule out a UTI, kidney disease, or very rare forms of diabetes. I hope this helps and am happy to answer any other questions you have!

Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Buzoo is adorable! Puppies do defecated a little more frequently than adult dogs, typically up to 4-5 times in a day. Sometimes puppies will defecate more frequently if they are excited. I recommend keeping a close eye on Buzoo's bowel movements - he should be seen by a vet if you notice that the stool is loose, has mucus or blood in it, or begins vomiting. Soft poops in dogs can be caused by intestinal worms, which are common in puppies. I would take take Tyson into the vet along with a fecal sample. The vet can confirm he does have worms and can give him a deworming treatment such as Drontal. I would take him into the vet either today or this weekend. As for the beef mince, it's not needed in his diet. Royal Canin is an excellent food, and it will provide all the nutrients he needs to grow and be healthy. Adding the mince is adding extra calories he doesn't need, it's also fatty and too fatty foods can lead to pancreatitis. I would avoid giving that to him. As an occasional treat, you can give him some boiled white meat chicken (no bones). Good luck, I hope this helps!
