Is it normal for my 6-month-old golden retriever puppy to pee a lot?

Maisy may have a urinary tract infection or she may have a congenital defect with in her urinary system (ectopic ureter). Some puppies are just fascinated by water and drink constantly regardless of thirst. The 25 ounces is about double what Wallace needs per day, dog’s typically drink 1-2 ounces per pound. While it is normal (although frustrating) to have “good” days and “bad” days while house training a puppy, the episodes you describe may be an indication of something more serious, such as a UTI. This is definitely possible if Phoebe is straining to urinate, urinating small amounts, or has reddish colored urine and if you notice her licking her vagina more frequently. If you think Sophie is uncomfortable and in pain, I would take her in to be examined by a veterinarian so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. If she is not uncomfortable, as you say, then she is probably just fine. Sometimes the frequency at which dogs go to the bathroom changes based on hydration and behavioral changes (not wanting to go outside much, etc.). I would keep an eye on her and if she begins to develop any symptoms such as needing to go more frequent, straining to urinate, blood in urine, etc. then I would take her in to be seen by a veterinarian.

But if Chica is having small, frequent urinations with straining she may have a urinary tract infection unrelated to being in heat. I recommend collecting a urine sample and taking Chica to your Vet for an exam. They can check her urine for infection. I hope this helps and I wish Chica a speedy recovery!

Your little girl sounds a bit nervous. Some dogs that are a little more submissive in nature can be nervous urinators. Meaning that when someone approaches them or they get excited they may urinate. This often gets better as they get older and gain more confidence, but can take some work. Can you try to change how you approach her with the leash? You could try to get down on her level with the leash behind your back and ask her to come to you instead of you going to her. You can also try distracting her with a treat while you put on the leash. If it seems to be related to approaching her head you can try having her wear a harness that way you dont have to approach her head. These are all some general ideas but you really just have to find out what her trigger is and change your routine to what works best for her. Hopefully with confidence it will improve with time. The flip side would be if she is urinating in the house at other points in time, then this would be more concerning for a physical problem such as a UTI that would prompt evaluation by your family vet.
