Why is my dog drinking and peeing constantly with clear urine?

His urine is very dilute from drinking lots of water. If he had a problem with his kidneys, you could see blood in his urine, peeing multiple times but in small amounts, lethargy, and possibly a loss of appetite. I hope this helps!

The most common diseases that cause dogs to drink and urinate more are urinary tract infections, kidney disease, liver disease, diabetes, cushings disease, and addisons disease. There are a number of things that can cause a dog to drink more and urinate more. Unfortunately, there isn't any way to know what is causing the problem without doing some testing. It's normal for puppies to have very clear, dilute urine because their kidneys are still developing. They can also get urinary tract infections and other issues as well. I would recommend scheduling a vet visit (or telling them you want to talk about this issue when you schedule his next vaccine appointment) and using a small tuberware to catch his first urination of the morning to bring to that appointment. They can check to see how concentrated his urine is. Keep the urine in the fridge if it's going to be more than 30-60 minutes until your appointment. Good luck!

If it's a small bowl, then yes this amount of water may be normal. He's a young puppy, so he won't be able to hold his bladder as long, and if he's drinking a lot of water, this amount of urination may also be normal. If he has a large water bowl and you are filling it this often, then this is not normal and may be a sign of a problem. In that case, have him seen by a vet. I'm not sure how to explain the sweet smell, have that checked out by a vet as well. I hope this helps!

If he does not appear to have a urinary tract infection, then he will likely need bloodwork. Common causes of increased thirst and urination in a dog are diabetes, kidney disease, liver disease or an adrenal gland disorder. In the meantime, do not limit his access to water. Drinking a lot more means that he is also urinating a lot more. This is called Polydipsia and polyuria or PU PD. There are various reasons for PU PD and they need to be investigated by a veterinarian, especially in an old dog. Blood work can rule out any of those. 1) diabetes---a urinalysis and blood test will be able to rule it in or out. Diabetes is usually treated with diet and insulin. 2) Cushing's disease: This is an overproduction of cortisone, either signaled by a pituitary tumor in the brain or by a malfunction or tumor of the adrenal glands. Medication can inhibit cortisone production. A potbelly and thinning or haircoat and excessive panting are common signs as well. 3) Kidney disease, treated with diet and supportive treatment 4) A urinary tract infection, urinary crystals or stones: treatment varies according to the cause. 5) diabetes insipidus, usually tested with a water deprivation test and treated with a medication called Minirin. You will need to make an appointment with your vet for an exam and blood tests. I am sure your vet will find the cause of the PU PD.
