My 6-month Husky puppy has bad poop. How do I switch food safely?

Hello. As veterinarians, we always love to view poop pictures, & Bear's poop looks pretty good. Just go slow with the transition. Replace only about 25% of the old food with the new taking several days at each stage. If Bear picks out the new, you can take a glass jar & mix 75% old with 25% new food, cover tightly & place in the fridge for 12-24 hours. This will allow all smells & flavors to blend. Then gradually replace more of the new food while decreasing the old. It might take a week, it may take a month, but usually you can easily transition a dog to a new food this way. Yes, that food is fine. I would recommend that you transition the foods over 2-4 weeks to avoid upsetting the stomach. You can mix them together slowly until it is only the Eukanuba. Some dogs don't have a sensitive stomach and switching between foods suddenly doesn't cause any issues.

It is important that puppies are on a good quality puppy food in order to support their growth and development. All new foods can cause some diarrhoea and it helps to introduce new foods over a few days as well as adding probiotics to help the bowel. If he is currently tolerating wet food best then a puppy wet formula would be recommended. Ensure also he is up to date with deworming treatments as intestinal worms can contribute to such signs also

Awww...Simba is adorable. Any diet change should be done gradually over the course of a week to avoid vomiting/diarrhea that can come from a sudden diet change. For the first 2 days feed a mixture of 75% puppy and 25% starter...for the next 2 days feed 50% puppy and 50% starter...for the following 2 days 25% puppy and 75% starter and then finally 100 % starter if there are no gastrointestinal signs during the week. 3 1/2 cups in three servings means a little bit more than one cup on each meal (3 times a day), if you have a puppy you definitely must feed him puppy food, not adult food, you should only switch to adult food after the age of 1 year.

However, it is important to continue her on puppy food for at least another 2-3 months. This will let her grow appropriately as needed. At 6 weeks old, your pet should be well on puppy food with no milk. You should go ahead and go forward with Royal Canin regular puppy large breed food with no additives. If Arjun happens to be having a hard time eating the kibble, then you can certainly add in some canned food at this point, but most puppies this age can no longer digest milk or cerelac, so it should not be given to them anymore. If your puppy just seems to not like Royal Canin anymore, then some other suggested brands are Hill's Science Diet, Eukanuba, or Purina. The amount to feed should be based on the guideline on the back of the bag, but it isn't a perfect science. Pay attention to your pet and feed less than what is recommended if he seems to be leaving a good amount still in the bowl. A good rule of thumb here is that whatever is suggested on the bag is likely going to be an over-estimate of the amount of food he will likely consume. To help with the loose stools, you should add in a probiotic such as Fortiflora or over the counter Culturelle for the next 7-14 days.
