Transitioning Newfoundland puppy to Royal Canin: picky eater, poop?

Royal canin is a great food! If you have some of the old food left I would mix The old food with the new food for about 10 days. You will want to start out with mostly old food and small amount of new food for the first few days and then gradually add more new food. By day 5-6, you should be at 50:50 of old:new dog food. After that you will slowly decrease the amount of old food until you are just giving the new food. For his size, he should get about 3 cups of the new food when you are switched completely over. You may need to adjust this as he continues to grow. I hope this helps!

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I have had excellent luck with Royal Canin so I can definitely support giving that a try. In general for giant breed dogs, feed according to the bag. Being 7 months, Bear is probably past the biggest of the growth spurts but we probably still don’t want to free feed. However, it the giant breed formulas, it is safer to feed larger quantities while still keeping bone growth at a proper rate. As for the beard, I have a schnauzer so I can relate a little. My best advice is just to wash the beard with a puppy shampoo once a week. Rinse and dry thoroughly. Finally, for the skin. Adding about 2000 mg per day of Fish oil can sometimes help with the skin however, I recommend talking to your vet. If Bear is already this itchy, food or environmental allergies could be to blame. Awww...Simba is adorable. Any diet change should be done gradually over the course of a week to avoid vomiting/diarrhea that can come from a sudden diet change. For the first 2 days feed a mixture of 75% puppy and 25% starter...for the next 2 days feed 50% puppy and 50% starter...for the following 2 days 25% puppy and 75% starter and then finally 100 % starter if there are no gastrointestinal signs during the week. I would recommend doing a gradual transition to the new food. Slowly every day remove some of the old food and add more of the new food. If he is still not eating when you try the gradual transition then I would recommend having him evaluated to make sure there is nothing medical going on. At this age Goofy is old enough to be on regular puppy food only. However, it may take him some time to transition from the cerelac to the kibble. I would recommend offering Goofy a mixture of both foods together for a few days. Once he is used to eating that, slowly start decreasing the amount of cerelac you are adding to the food. Doing the transition slowly will help him get used to the new food. Some other brands to try that are high quality food include Hills, Purina, Royal Canin, Eukanuba, and Iams. I hope this helps. A bland diet may result in soft stool with the appearance in the images. You can try transitioning Bear slowly to his regular diet. A good quality large breed puppy food my help put weight on him. Have him examined by your veterinarian if the weight loss persists. Submit a stool sample to diagnose intestinal parasites, bacterial overgrowth, maldigestion or malabsorption disorders. Make sure he isn't getting into anything else, such as bird seed.

The problem with changing foods too quickly is that dogs can get GI upset (especially diarrhea) with a sudden diet change. If a dog is not eating the old food anymore, sometimes we will use a bland diet (1/2 cooked white rice and 1/2 cooked white meat chicken without any skin or bones) as the other food to mix with the new food to allow for a gradual diet change to the new food to (hopefully) prevent any GI upset, so you might consider that option.
