My outdoor dog gets wet in cold. Will he get sick? How to protect him?

I would definitely provide a heat source for them in the winter, especially if it is going to hit freezing temperatures. I worry about hypothermia if there is no heat source. I would also provide an insulated area for them. Small dog houses can be built quite easily and still be low cost. There are many templates online of how to build a dog house with insulation. Dog beds, blankets and another dog to keep warm with would help as well. If the temperature are too low outside, it is not advisable to keep them outdoors as this could result in hypothermia and even lead to death. I hope this helps! If Snoopy has to stay outside it is a good idea to make sure he has the right enclosure that is safe from the rain, cold, and other weather conditions. An insulated dog house or kennel with a secure top can help ensure he stays safe and dry. If he currently has ticks, is ill from being wet for very long, or is otherwise acting unwell, it would be best to bring him to your vet so the tick can be removed and any underlying illnesses treated to help him feel better.

Hello. Dogs can control there body temp quite a bit by how much air collects underneath the hair. Even short hairs can trap the air against the skin & keeps your pet warm like when you wear a puffy coat. As long as Rex seems happy outdoors & is not shivering, then he can stay out for quite a bit of time. But if you see shivering or he is pressed up against the house seeking warmth, bring him in. Anytime there is rain, or significant cold winds, especially if the temp outdoors is close to freezing, bring him indoors after just a short time outside. A roof that does not leak and walls to protect against ran is needed. You will have to change the cedar chips out regularly and make sure to add a bed or blanket to snuggle in for extra warmth. Ideally on freezing nights you should bring him in and confine him to a garage or laundry room or bathroom if able

This is a big change for Rocco! He need time to adapt. I would suggest to let him inside till you go to bed so he doesn't see you awake within the house and doesn't get stressed because cannot interact with you or your family members. Sometimes they do not like to sleep in the brand new house, they just don't understand what changed compared to before. Add some toys and treats to make the new recovery even more comfy. I think it is still fair to try to walk him outside if using a sweater or coat to keep him warm. I would avoid walking him outside when it is raining as dogs can have a hard time regulating their temperature specially when very young. You can get a sweater for him online or at your local pet store. You can use treats to encourage him to walk outside. Good luck and have a good night!

It really depends on how cold it is outside, and how well sheltered the area is. I would make sure the area surrounding the house is shielded from the elements so rain and snow can't get into the house, and that there is an overhang of some sort so Kirby can get to food/water/potty safely without freezing his feet. You can also put a thermometer inside the house on a very cold day and see how warm it stays inside of it. If it's cold enough to freeze paws or bodies, it's best to keep Kirby inside. If it's too cold for him to be out but he isn't fully allowed to run around the house, crate training or keeping him in an easy to clean area such as a laundry room can make sure he stays warm enough inside without getting into trouble.
