How cold is too cold for my dog outside? Does temp change hurt him?

Hello. It really depends on the overall conditions & how long your pet will be outdoors. Temps around freezing are very tolerable for dogs during short excursions outdoors & longer walks where they will be moving pretty consistently. Temps that get down into the teens, a strong wind or rain, your basset might appreciate a coat, but most dogs can easily tough things out for their daily walks & many resent wearing a coat. There is nothing wrong with putting on a coat, but even a short haired breed can puff up their coats a bit creating an insulating air pocket over their skin. In reality if Teddy likes the snow and he is comfortable outside you do not necessarily need the booties and coat unless you are staying for an extended amount of time (over 20-30 minutes). You can start using it when it is under 40 degrees Fahrenheit. It really depends on Teddy and what he tolerates. For my dogs I usually do it when it is under 20 degrees Fahrenheit based on what they tolerate specifically. Good luck!

If a dog is cold, they will shiver and may be more lethargic than usual. German Shepherds have a thick coat, but the lowest temperature I wouldn’t leave a dog outside is below 45F. I hope this helps.

HI, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Odie is super cute! If Odie is an outside dog then he needs shelter from the rain and the cold. Provide a dog house that is dry and protects from the wind, rain and snow (if you get snow). You can even look in to safe heat sources if it gets that cold in your area. I do not recommend not having shelter for outside dogs. He shouldn't get sick with proper shelter. I hope this helps and good luck!

I would definitely provide a heat source for them in the winter, especially if it is going to hit freezing temperatures. I worry about hypothermia if there is no heat source. I would also provide an insulated area for them. Small dog houses can be built quite easily and still be low cost. There are many templates online of how to build a dog house with insulation. Dog beds, blankets and another dog to keep warm with would help as well. If the temperature are too low outside, it is not advisable to keep them outdoors as this could result in hypothermia and even lead to death. I hope this helps! Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. Huskies are very tolerable of cold weather and have been known to tolerate temperatures as low as -60 degrees Fahrenheit. I would still be careful with how long he is outside for but 40 minutes and exercising in it for this long should be safe for him. If he begins to slow down, lay down more and not want to move when outside, I would get him inside and warm him up. His thick winter coat has likely come in and this will protect him from the cold. Hello, the Australian Shepherd dog is actually a herding working breed. It is not recognized as an arctic breed such as a Huskie. Therefore Aussies cold tolerance is not as good as an arctic breed. In general, if it is too cold outside for you, then its too cold outside for your dog. Their thick coat will help keep them warm some, however, it would not be ideal to keep your dog outside in 32 degree weather as this is close to freezing. Hope this helps and best of luck.
