How cold is too cold for a young dog in an outdoor heated dog house?

As long as the doghouse is heavily insulated and she has thick bedding inside, and the door isn't open to where the wind blows in, it should be fine. I would definitely provide a heat source for them in the winter, especially if it is going to hit freezing temperatures. I worry about hypothermia if there is no heat source. I would also provide an insulated area for them. Small dog houses can be built quite easily and still be low cost. There are many templates online of how to build a dog house with insulation. Dog beds, blankets and another dog to keep warm with would help as well. If the temperature are too low outside, it is not advisable to keep them outdoors as this could result in hypothermia and even lead to death. I hope this helps! That depends on where you live. If you have an insulated dog house that stays dry and gives protection from the wind and rain then leaving her outside during the day should be fine. I wouldn’t chain her since if she’s able to move around the yard she can keep herself warm with activity. I would keep her inside during the night so she can eat, drink and sleep somewhere warm and comfortable. As she ages she may need to be inside more since she may have arthritis and other medical issues that would make her more susceptible to getting sick or being painful out in the cold. A roof that does not leak and walls to protect against ran is needed. You will have to change the cedar chips out regularly and make sure to add a bed or blanket to snuggle in for extra warmth. Ideally on freezing nights you should bring him in and confine him to a garage or laundry room or bathroom if able

HI, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Odie is super cute! If Odie is an outside dog then he needs shelter from the rain and the cold. Provide a dog house that is dry and protects from the wind, rain and snow (if you get snow). You can even look in to safe heat sources if it gets that cold in your area. I do not recommend not having shelter for outside dogs. He shouldn't get sick with proper shelter. I hope this helps and good luck!

I think heating blankets would be a good idea for your dogs. Maybe you could save up to afford a heating box in the future for them. I'd get a couple of heating blankets for the dogs. Put a layer of regular blankets on the bottom of the igloo, then the heating blankets, and a final layer of regular blankets on top. This will warm the upper blankets, but keep them from potentially getting burned if the blankets are hot. I hope this helps!

Hello. Dogs can control there body temp quite a bit by how much air collects underneath the hair. Even short hairs can trap the air against the skin & keeps your pet warm like when you wear a puffy coat. As long as Rex seems happy outdoors & is not shivering, then he can stay out for quite a bit of time. But if you see shivering or he is pressed up against the house seeking warmth, bring him in. Anytime there is rain, or significant cold winds, especially if the temp outdoors is close to freezing, bring him indoors after just a short time outside.
