My dogs are outside. How can I keep them warm and safe in winter?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | unneutered | 10 months and 16 days old | 65 lbs

Can dogs survive outside in the winter if he/she have another dog to stay with and plenty of bedding? Is there anything more I can do to ensure a better winter for my outside dogs? I assume with another dog to warm up with it could be better. I'm also going to buy heaters, but I want to make sure he will survive well. Sadly it's not my decision they are outside and I'm trying to make it as best as I can for them.

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. I would definitely provide a heat source for them in the winter, especially if it is going to hit freezing temperatures. I worry about hypothermia if there is no heat source. I would also provide an insulated area for them. Small dog houses can be built quite easily and still be low cost. There are many templates online of how to build a dog house with insulation. Dog beds, blankets and another dog to keep warm with would help as well. If the temperature are too low outside, it is not advisable to keep them outdoors as this could result in hypothermia and even lead to death. I hope this helps! If the wooden dog house is insulated, and there is a lot of padding inside and the door is covered, that would be ok during the day but I would avoid it at night. Make sure that the balcony has a secure border so that she cannot get through the barrier /slip through or under the bars and fall or escape. Are heating blankets safe for keeping dogs warm in an outdoor house?

I think heating blankets would be a good idea for your dogs. Maybe you could save up to afford a heating box in the future for them. I'd get a couple of heating blankets for the dogs. Put a layer of regular blankets on the bottom of the igloo, then the heating blankets, and a final layer of regular blankets on top. This will warm the upper blankets, but keep them from potentially getting burned if the blankets are hot. I hope this helps!

How to choose an outdoor dog house for warmth and proper bedding?

There are many things to consider for keeping an outdoor dog comfortable. Any type of shelter will do as long as it provides enough room (for the dog to stand up and turn around), protects the dog from the weather (good roof and sound walls) and the door is situated such that the prevailing winds do not blow right in. Straw bedding is helpful during the cold weather to help the dog maintain some heat in the house. Fleas are better controlled with medications such as Frontline, Seresto collar, NexGard, and many others. If your dog is a short-haired dog, pay close attention during the cold months to make sure he is able to keep warm. There are also coats for dogs that can help! Thank you for using pet coach.

My outdoor dog gets wet in cold. Will he get sick? How to protect him?

HI, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Odie is super cute! If Odie is an outside dog then he needs shelter from the rain and the cold. Provide a dog house that is dry and protects from the wind, rain and snow (if you get snow). You can even look in to safe heat sources if it gets that cold in your area. I do not recommend not having shelter for outside dogs. He shouldn't get sick with proper shelter. I hope this helps and good luck!

Is it safe for my Parson Russell Terrier to sleep outside in winter?

Hello, thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Jack Russells, as you know, do not grow much of a winter coat. They do get a bit of a thicker coat that provides some protection, but they are not able to withstand cold winds & rain. If Bella is provided, & will use, an insulated dog house like an Igloo, she should be fine. Place blankets, & not straw in the dog house. If you can, it would be great to add a heated pad made for dog houses, or a heat lamp to keep Bella comfortable. If the temperatures are going to be especially bitter, or there is prolonged rain or sleet, please consider bringing her indoors.

Is my 6-month puppy's outdoor dog house warm enough at 6°C?

As long as the doghouse is heavily insulated and she has thick bedding inside, and the door isn't open to where the wind blows in, it should be fine. Is it safe for my older beagle to stay outside with a dog house?

That depends on where you live. If you have an insulated dog house that stays dry and gives protection from the wind and rain then leaving her outside during the day should be fine. I wouldn’t chain her since if she’s able to move around the yard she can keep herself warm with activity. I would keep her inside during the night so she can eat, drink and sleep somewhere warm and comfortable. As she ages she may need to be inside more since she may have arthritis and other medical issues that would make her more susceptible to getting sick or being painful out in the cold.
