Is an insulated dog house enough to protect my outdoor dog from cold?

There are many things to consider for keeping an outdoor dog comfortable. Any type of shelter will do as long as it provides enough room (for the dog to stand up and turn around), protects the dog from the weather (good roof and sound walls) and the door is situated such that the prevailing winds do not blow right in. Straw bedding is helpful during the cold weather to help the dog maintain some heat in the house. Fleas are better controlled with medications such as Frontline, Seresto collar, NexGard, and many others. If your dog is a short-haired dog, pay close attention during the cold months to make sure he is able to keep warm. There are also coats for dogs that can help! Thank you for using pet coach.

As long as the doghouse is heavily insulated and she has thick bedding inside, and the door isn't open to where the wind blows in, it should be fine. It really depends on how cold it is outside, and how well sheltered the area is. I would make sure the area surrounding the house is shielded from the elements so rain and snow can't get into the house, and that there is an overhang of some sort so Kirby can get to food/water/potty safely without freezing his feet. You can also put a thermometer inside the house on a very cold day and see how warm it stays inside of it. If it's cold enough to freeze paws or bodies, it's best to keep Kirby inside. If it's too cold for him to be out but he isn't fully allowed to run around the house, crate training or keeping him in an easy to clean area such as a laundry room can make sure he stays warm enough inside without getting into trouble.

I would definitely provide a heat source for them in the winter, especially if it is going to hit freezing temperatures. I worry about hypothermia if there is no heat source. I would also provide an insulated area for them. Small dog houses can be built quite easily and still be low cost. There are many templates online of how to build a dog house with insulation. Dog beds, blankets and another dog to keep warm with would help as well. If the temperature are too low outside, it is not advisable to keep them outdoors as this could result in hypothermia and even lead to death. I hope this helps! HI, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Odie is super cute! If Odie is an outside dog then he needs shelter from the rain and the cold. Provide a dog house that is dry and protects from the wind, rain and snow (if you get snow). You can even look in to safe heat sources if it gets that cold in your area. I do not recommend not having shelter for outside dogs. He shouldn't get sick with proper shelter. I hope this helps and good luck!

If the wooden dog house is insulated, and there is a lot of padding inside and the door is covered, that would be ok during the day but I would avoid it at night. Make sure that the balcony has a secure border so that she cannot get through the barrier /slip through or under the bars and fall or escape. You can move everyone indoors and confine her and the litter to a small, warm room or you can insulate the dog house and protect it from the elements. I would hesitate to recommend placing a heat source for fear of fire or burns.
