Why is my older beagle's eyelid drooping? Does she need a vet?

It causes the lower eye lids to droop down, exposing the conjunctiva (or the pink part inside the eye) and causing chronic exposure to the outside and thus inflammation and irritation. While there is a genetic predisposition, this only means that the condition can develop at some point. Congenital conditions are also genetically linked, but occur at birth or shortly after. Ectropion in dogs, just like in people, gets worse with age as the muscles in the face get weaker and the eye lids droop down. From Lexi's photo, I can see that she does have droopy eye lids, but I cannot see the lower ones. This condition can be corrected with surgery, similar to an eye lift in people. It appears that Tinkerbell has a mild condition of ectropion, where the bottom eyelid hangs out a little more than it should. This doesn't appear to be causing any problems at the moment and usually it doesn't. It's possible that this could get worse as she ages and there may be a need for surgery if she happens to have problems associated with it. I hope that helps. That is a very good looking puppy! It can be quite normal for some breeds,including beagles, to have a little bit of droopiness in the lower eyelids. This allows you to visualize their third eyelid, which is the bright pink membrane that you see in the photos. Your pet’s eyes appear normal. Signs of a problem would include squinting, rubbing the eyes as if they are itchy, or a discharge. As Your puppy grows, the droopiness gets less and less. Thank you for your question.

Eye problems are always very concerning and Pup Pup will need to be examined by a veterinarian ASAP. Corneal ulcers and injuries can cause loss of vision, are painful and can be caused even by crusty eye lids scraping on the eye ball. The fact that the eye is swollen and the the lower lid is drooping does point to a more serious problem. Please take her to an emergency vet today.

If Teddi's surgery was just yesterday, he will still have some swelling in the eyelid from the surgery, which will make the eyelid look droopier (swelling will push the lower eyelid away from the eye). It should improve as the swelling goes down. Keep giving him the medication prescribed by your vet, and schedule a recheck for a week out from surgery to make sure he's healing appropriately. Prolapsing of the gland is known as a cherry eye. She will need to se her veterinarian for an examination. I hope this information helps!

It sounds like your poor baby has a condition called Ectropion. This is a genetic condition where the lower eyelids fold outward due to excessive skin. This condition is not caused by diet and no home remedies are available for treatment. The only treatment for this unfortunately is surgical removal of the extra skin on the lid to allow the lid to rest comfortably around the eye, removing the bag like appearance that you describe. You should discuss with your vet about surgical correction if interested. Ectropion over time can cause repeat eye infections and a dry eye condition if not treated.
