My dog's eye is red, swollen, watery near the corner. What's wrong?

This looks like a prolapse of the gland of the third eyelid. This most commonly is a genetic problem that is usually present shortly after birth, but since it seems like you are just noticing it I am wondering if there was some kind of trauma to the third eyelid that caused the gland to prolapse. Occasionally lymph nodes in this same area can enlarge, or rarely there might be a tumor or growth that could look like this. I would recommend seeing your veterinarian. They may want to stain Bamboo's eye to make sure there are not any scratches on the cornea. Often surgery is required to replace the gland.

Poor Ella! I'm sorry to hear that she's having this problem. It's a bit hard to tell from the photos exactly what's going on, but it looks like her third eyelid is elevated in the right eye - that's the pale-colored membrane that you can see in the inner corner of her eye. It also looks like the area surrounding the eye may be a bit swollen. These symptoms could be caused by a number of different things, so she would really need an in-person exam and possibly some testing to diagnose the problem. Conjunctivitis or an injury to the eye such as a corneal ulcer can cause swelling and third eyelid elevation. She could also have an abscess or tumor behind the eye, causing it to bulge outward and have this appearance. Treatment will depend on what the underlying problem is, so I would recommend taking her to the vet for an exam as soon as you are able to.

This presentation is likely to be due to the so called ''cherry eye''. This defect causes the lacrimal gland to prolapse and protrude from the eye as a red fleshy mass. This looks like a swelling of Poppy's conjunctiva as opposed to the eye itself. It could be due to an allergic reaction or infection such as conjunctivitis. She will need eye drops and antinflammatories to settle this down so go to your vet as soon as you can. In the mean time pressing a cooled tea bag on the outside of the eye can provide some relief.

It does look like a cherry eye. Cherry eyes are usually in the inside corner closer to the nose. The redness in the outside maybe a sign of inflammation or an infection. If there is a discharge or he is holding his eye closed then he needs to be seen by your vet

I would recommend a check up by your vet - it looks like the third eyelid is inflamed (common with viral infections) and may be developing a cherry eye. In the meantime, bathing with sterile saline eye wash may help keep the eye fresh and clean and reduce any discomfort
