My dog's eye droops after entropion surgery. Is it normal or fixable?

I am sorry to hear about Ellie but glad the itching has stopped! The skin around her eye looks a little red and I assume this is what you are speaking of. If her stitches were just removed in the past few days it is possible there was just some residual irritation from the sutures. We can also see inflammation around the eyes like this due to allergies. I would let your vet know about her eyelid and see if they feel a trial of an antihistamine such as diphenhydramine would be beneficial, or if they recommend a topical eye ointment on the lid to try to decrease irritation.

Hello! Sometimes after anesthesia pets will take a little time to return to normal, and that can include being a little droopy or sedate for about 24 hours. However, if the eyelid is still droopy in 48 hours, you should have your cat examined for other problems, such as a nerve that isn't working or an irritation on the eye. Hope this helps!

Oh my. This does look quite uncomfortable for your pet Lana and I would say that yes a warm water rag is ok to use, but then I would consider getting a second opinion on this eye to see if there is more that can be done to help resolve the complications that occurred. It looks to be quite a bit of swelling there, but I am unsure how many days post sx your pet is in. It is typical to see post op swelling for 3-5 days, but it should be slowly improving every day. Topical as well as oral antibiotics may be needed here if there is a suspected infection at the incision site. Even a suture reaction is possible here. I hope that Lana's eye gets better soon! This is a condition known as ectropion, which is not uncommon with beagles and other hounds. This is usually OK as long as there are no problems. If she does happen to have eye issues in the future, then there are surgical procedures to easily correct this. I hope that helps and Ginger gets better soon.

It causes the lower eye lids to droop down, exposing the conjunctiva (or the pink part inside the eye) and causing chronic exposure to the outside and thus inflammation and irritation. While there is a genetic predisposition, this only means that the condition can develop at some point. Congenital conditions are also genetically linked, but occur at birth or shortly after. Ectropion in dogs, just like in people, gets worse with age as the muscles in the face get weaker and the eye lids droop down. From Lexi's photo, I can see that she does have droopy eye lids, but I cannot see the lower ones. This condition can be corrected with surgery, similar to an eye lift in people. To keep Lexi more comfortable, you can apply artificial tears or lubricating drops to keep her eyes moist. I hope this helps and am happy to answer any other questions you may have!

With TECA (total ear canal ablation) surgeries, there is a good likelihood of developing facial nerve paresis, which is most often a temporary condition. The facial nerve wraps around the base of the ear and can often be "bruised" during the procedure. This nerve controls the muscles of facial expression, including eyelid movement. In most cases (>90%), there is significant improvement in these deficits within 2 months, with most returning to normal function. Some dogs retain permanent facial nerve deficits, but fortunately, that is much less common. Initially, I would recommend following the prescribed dosage of eye lubricant closely. The cornea can dry out pretty easily, opening it to more possible damage from irritation.

I would say it’s not unreasonable for 4 days post-op but the swelling should be going down rapidly at this point. If it’s not improved by tomorrow, I’d pop in to see the vet who did the surgery to make sure there is not a complication such as seroma or hematoma (fluids or blood pocket). In the mean time, I recommend warm packing for 5-10 minutes 3-4 times daily. To do this, soak a wash cloth in warm water, wring it out, and put it in a plastic bag. Apply gently to the surgery site. Seepage of some clearish fluids may happen and this is just fine. Best wishes to you and Nemi!
