My male dog is potty trained but having accidents. Is it leg lifting?

I’m sorry to hear about Bruno! I am concerned that he might have developed a urinary tract infection. There is one medication (prednisone/prednisolone) they can caused increased urination and drinking but those should stop as soon as the medication was stopped. The UTI may be even more likely if he’s recently hurt his back or neck because they tend not to posture/squat all the way or for long enough when it hurts. So they hold their urine longer than they might otherwise do or don’t empty their bladder fully. These can predispose to UTI. Take Bruno (and a urine sample if you can catch one) in to the vet to do a urine test and get on antibiotics if that’s what it turns out to be. The urine test will also screen for other causes of accidents like diabetes and kidney disease. Hope this helps and best of luck to you and Bruno!

If Oreo is doing it in the same spot and smells before doing it, I would say this is a training problem rather than a medical issue. If it was a medical issue, I would expect it would be in more random places. Try taking him out more often during the day, and after every meal. Stay with him outside until he goes. Now if this doesn't help the issue, he starts urinating all over the house, you see blood in his urine, and/or he becomes lethargic, then I would be concerned it is a medical issue. At that point, take him into the vet. Best of luck.

I am sorry to hear about your dog! The first step is to have your vet examine him to be sure there isn't a medical reason for this new issue. There are a multitude of issues that can cause urinary accidents, including urinary tract infection, bladder stones, kidney disease, diabetes, and more. If the vet rules out a medical cause you can discuss if this is an anxiety issue or a loss of potty training. Anxiety is sometimes treated with oral medications. Cujo is such a cutie. Congrats on adopting an adult dog!! If this was a one time event, I would just monitor him. He definitely could just be getting used to his new house and routine. However, if he has any further accidents, if he starts asking to go outside to urinate more frequently, if he strains to urinate at all, or if there is any blood in his urine , I would have him evaluated by a veterinarian right away. They will do a urinalysis to screen for an infection likely and may do other tests based on results such as x-rays to look for bladder stones.

I wouldn't expect this behavior as a side effect from surgery and would be more concerned about a UTI or other medical problem. Puppies certainly can get urinary tract infections although they are a bit more common in female dogs than males. I would recommend making an appointment with your veterinarian who would likely recommend checking a urine sample. If Finn does not have a medical issue you could discuss what could be causing inappropriate urination and how to get him back on track with potty training.

If the antibiotics didn't make much difference, I'd be suspicious of puppy vaginitis, which is a relatively common inflammatory condition that can lead to accidents and sometimes make them more susceptible to urinary infections. It generally resolves with age. I would also check for a stricture (this may require sedation as they don't love vaginal palpation...). For now, since your vet hasn't been able to check a urinalysis, that would be the first priority. See if you can get a sample- sneak a small container under her when she squats. If you have to hold onto the sample a few hours before dropping it at your vet, stick it in the fridge, but the fresher the better. If you're having no luck, your vet can collect a sterile sample via cystocentesis. Hope this helps.

14 weeks is very young to be fully house trained. The best thing to do is have a urine sample checked by your vet. If there is an infection then it can cause these symptoms and you will need antibiotics to fix this. If there urine is normal, then it is just behavioral and training problems associated with his age.
