Why doesn't my male dog lift his leg when peeing? Is it a concern?

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Male | 2 years and 11 months old

Why my dog dont lift his leg up while peeing and he is almost 3 yrs now..and my neighbor has gsd 1 yr old and he pee by lift his leg up so why my dog dont lift leg and neighbor dog does ? How can i force my dog to lift his leg while peeing ? Also if dog dont lift his leg is there a possibility that he has shorter lifespan ? Give me technique how can I train my dog to lift his leg while peeing

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This does not mean at all that he is expected to have a shorter lifespan. He is expected to have the same lifespan as it he lifted his leg while urinating. There is no reason or benefit to train him to lift his leg while urinating. Some male dogs just do not lift their legs to urinate. There is no need to be concerned about this. Have a great day!

Some dogs never do that, and it's fine. They usually do it between 6-12 months of age, but if he isn't doing it by now, Bruno may never do it. I would not worry about it, my own dog (a Basset Hound), doesn't lift his leg to pee either :-)

If he is older , he may have an enlarged prostrate gland, even with him being neutered. And, at any age, there is always the possibility of a urinary tract infection. Why does my male dog squat to pee instead of lifting his leg?

This is not really a problem. Many male dogs squat to urinate especially if there are no objects around for them to urinate on. I am not sure you can correct this behavior but the best way would be to take him to areas where other male dogs have urinated. This may provoke him to want to "mark his territory" on top of that other dog's urine.

Is it normal for my male dog to lift his leg like he's peeing to poop?

That's a good question. Abnormal postures when pooping can indicate an injury, or deformity in the pelvic canal. It can also indicate a problem with a knee, leg, or hip. If he is otherwise normal, then this is not likely something to be concerned about, but can be mentioned to your vet the next time he goes in for an exam; or good to discuss with your vet if he happens to have any other issues with the legs or hips. As for the appetite, if you haven't tried canned food I would give this a try or adding cooked chicken breast and chicken broth to the dog food. If he still does not want to eat I would talk to your veterinarian about having his blood tested just to make sure everything is normal. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. My male dog is potty trained but having accidents. Is it leg lifting?

Yes, you sure try the turf product. Works well for many people. If he already had a UTI at such a young age I would be worried it has recurred or it was never completely resolved (not sure how long ago it was). There could also be a different underlying medical issue. If the turf does not help you should have him back to the vet for a follow-up. If Bud isn't have urinary accidents, asking to go out more to pee, showing signs of urgency then he is likely "saving" up his urine to mark. He isn't neutered and is reaching maturity.
