Why is my dog skipping meals, not eating, and acting weak?

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | unneutered | 11 months and 5 days old

Why has my dog started skipping a meal everyday? He was being fed twice but now he has started skipping 1 meal, I’ve tried different foods too but he just sniffs it and leaves. The meal he eats also gets left behind a little. He’s weak and my vet asked me to feed him thrice per day(full bowl). But he’s eating only half bowl per day. And that also at irregular intervals. My vet said it’s normal if he’s kept with a female but he’s alone and hasn’t reached sexual maturity yet.(dsnt lift leg to pee)

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. Some male dogs do not lift their leg to urinate so this may be normal for Max. As for the appetite, if you haven't tried canned food I would give this a try or adding cooked chicken breast and chicken broth to the dog food. If he still does not want to eat I would talk to your veterinarian about having his blood tested just to make sure everything is normal. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. It could be the Mike isn't feeling well from a GI illness or he could be suffering from intestinal worms causing GI upset. The next time this happens, have him seen by a vet for a health check, who can determine the exact cause behind this behavior.

Thank for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This is not uncommon necessarily. What I recommend is to try to avoid this issue is offering food at certain times of the day and if he does not eat then you take it away from him. Eventually, he will learn that he has to eat at certain times and he will likely become more regular in terms of his eating habits. This is something that is more common than we realize. As long as he is otherwise fine with a good appetite and activity level and no vomiting or diarrhea, this is likely ok. Good luck and have a good day!

Why won't my dog eat, only drinks water, and is very lethargic?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Max! Max does sound sick. I can't fully understand your post but I think you are saying that Max is lethargic and isn't eating. That he is holding down water. Is he vomiting too? From your pictures his gums do look a little less pink then they should. If he is anemic (low red blood cells) then that can be serious. Causes could be blood loss from a tumor inside his belly, infectious causes like tick borne diseases, immune conditions or other types of cancer. There are many causes for lethargy and not eating: blockage, cancer, kidney or liver failure, viral diseases, etc. I would have him seen by your Vet for an exam. I wish you and Max the very best!

My dog is limping, sick, and won't eat. What can I give him?

Hello, thank you for your question about Max. Based on Max's sore foot and the progression of his symptoms I would be suspicious that Max could have a tick-borne infection. These often start with signs of limping or discomfort but can progress to inappetance, vomiting, or other signs. If Max has already been prescribed an antibiotic for such infections, you could try cooking a bland/enticing diet such as boiled chicken/hamburger and white rice, scrambled eggs, cottage cheese, or pasta. If Max is reluctant to eat even these things and continues to act sick I would recommend having him evaluated by a veterinarian so that they can evaluate him and discuss other diagnostic or treatment options. My dog drinks excessive water and won't eat. Is a vet visit urgent?

Poor Max. I would recommend to take him to your vet. It is not normal for them to drink excessive amounts of water and have a lack of appetite. There are several things that can cause these symptoms including certain bacterial infections, diabetes. viral infections, toxins and more. Your vet will likely want to start by running some blood work to help rule out different causes of the increased water intake and then treat accordingly. I hope Max starts to feel better!

My dog is refusing to eat, hunched over, and panting. What's wrong?

Hello and thank you for reaching out to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. It sounds like Marley is pretty sick, and I'm worried about him as well. Not eating or drinking can be signs of a systemic illness that is causing him to feel ill. Examples are liver disease, kidney disease, hormonal imbalances, and even cancer. Walking hunched is an indication of back pain and/or abdominal pain. He may be panting despite the normal room temperature because of this pain or discomfort. For all of these reasons, I would recommend having Marley evaluated by a veterinarian as soon as possible. They will likely recommend blood work, a urinalysis and abdominal x-rays to look for evidence of underlying disease that could make him unwilling to eat or drink. These tests may also give some insight into why he is walking hunched over and sensitive to you touching him. They will also allow your veterinarian to develop the most appropriate treatment plan to get him feeling better as quickly as possible. I hope this is helpful, and best of luck to you and Marley.

My dog won't eat, is lethargic, and vets are closed. What should I do?

It is hard to state exactly what to do to make Max feel better. He really needs a veterinarian to perform a physical examination on him and some diagnostics. If there is an emergency veterinarian in your area I would recommend bringing him there. I would ask neighbors to see if there is someone open right now. If it has been 4 days since he last ate anything, I would recommend getting him examined by a veterinarian and having his blood tested to make sure there are no concerns.
