Is it normal for my male dog to lift his leg like he's peeing to poop?

Pet's info: Dog | Rhodesian Ridgeback | Male | neutered | 3 years and 11 months old | 65 lbs

ok so this may be weird but I am a little bit concerned, My male dog likes to poop with his back leg raised as if he were peeing. is this normal?

That's a good question. Abnormal postures when pooping can indicate an injury, or deformity in the pelvic canal. It can also indicate a problem with a knee, leg, or hip. If he is otherwise normal, then this is not likely something to be concerned about, but can be mentioned to your vet the next time he goes in for an exam; or good to discuss with your vet if he happens to have any other issues with the legs or hips.

Dogs will sometimes shake when squatting to potty. It has to due with all the weight placed on his hips and hindlegs. It can be normal, but to be safe, I would recommend having Bruno checked out by his vet to make sure he doesn't have any problems with his hips and hindlimbs, such as hip dysplasia, which is unfortunately common in large breed dogs.

Is it normal for my dog to poop right after peeing on a tree?

While uncommon, Jetsen's urination immediately followed by a bowel movement can still be normal. (One of my dogs also pooped on trees in his younger days.) As long as he is consciously having a bowel movement (i.e. posturing/squatting) and not simply having stool fall out while he is unaware of it, there should be no reason for concern.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This does not mean at all that he is expected to have a shorter lifespan. He is expected to have the same lifespan as it he lifted his leg while urinating. There is no reason or benefit to train him to lift his leg while urinating. Some male dogs just do not lift their legs to urinate. There is no need to be concerned about this. Have a great day!

Hello. This may or may not be a problem. You do not indicate his age, but if he is a young dog, this may just be behavioral. If he is older , he may have an enlarged prostrate gland, even with him being neutered. And, at any age, there is always the possibility of a urinary tract infection. Why does my male dog squat to pee and struggle with housebreaking?

Some dogs don't lift their leg to pee, and that's normal. You can get him checked out to see if there is a problem with his hips preventing him from lifting his leg, however, if you are concerned. I'm not sure what you have tried in terms of housebreaking him, so I would speak to the vet about the methods you have tried to housebreaking, and the vet can suggest methods you have not yet tried.

This could be normal behavior - particularly the turning in circles and walking while defecating. Some dogs will do this when defecating for no particular reason. The whining is a bit more concerning and could be a sign of pain so it might be a good idea to have Trusty examined by your vet to make sure his anal glands and rectum seem normal.
