My dog has a torn nail, what can I do for it until I see the vet?

Pet's info: Dog | Redbone Coonhound | Male | unneutered | 11 months and 5 days old | 80 lbs

Posted a question about his nail and was asked to post pictures. It hasn’t blead and I can’t afford to take him until Friday and trying to see what I can do to treat it at home.

It definitely appears to be torn at the fleshy part of the nail. These can sometimes be easily removed. You can try this at home if you are comfortable, but should be prepared for a lot of bleeding. Before you attempt that, I recommend you read the article at the link below.

It's good to keep it clean and keep it covered for now. You can keep it clean by flushing the foot with cool water for 10 minutes a day. You can also do a footbath with epsom salts for 15 minutes once a day.

As long as there is no active bleeding, you can try soaking her paw in a warm water bath with Epsom Salt for 5-10 minutes, twice a day. This can help soothe some of the tenderness associated with the torn nail. Do this daily and limit her activity until this area heals.

It's difficult to know the extent of the injury without seeing it, but it doesn't sound very bad. In some cases it's OK to care for it at home, but in others, it's best to have professional help to avoid further complications. Below is a link to good information about caring for torn nails.

My dog ripped his toenail off. Is it serious? What should I do?

Ouch, poor Buster! This will be quite painful to him and is likely bleeding a lot. The problem with it is that it can become infected. I would apply gentle pressure to stop any bleeding, and then clean it with warm water and antiseptic soap. You may need to dip the area in styptic powder or corn starch to stop bleeding. I would bandage up this foot to keep it protected, and then put a sock over his foot to keep the bandage clean and dry. Put a plastic bag over the sock when Buster goes outside. You will likely need to put an Ecollar on him to keep him from chewing at the sock. You can buy one at a pet store, or you can make one at home. I think as long as you schedule a visit on Monday Bertie should be okay. I'd recommend getting a E-collar to prevent Bertie from licking the nail as this may result in infection. You can also soak the foot in a diluted chlorohexidine or diluted iodine solution and then rinse thoroughly. If Bertie stops eating, acts lethargic, starts limping, or is obsessively trying to lick the nail then it would be better to get him to a veterinarian sooner. If he remains otherwise normal I think you are okay in waiting until Monday. Torn nails can be pretty painful, but please remember there are no safe over the counter pain medications for dogs so you will need a prescription from a vet for pain meds. My small dog's nail is torn and bleeding. How do I treat it at home?

It sounds like he tore off the nail. You can stop the bleeding using styptic powder, it’s what men use after cutting themselves shaving. I would get a cone to prevent licking, they should have them at Walmart or PetCo. I wouldn’t wrap the foot but soaking it in warm water to clean it after it stops bleeding will help prevent infection. Leaving it open to the air will let it dry and toughen up. There is no safe over the counter pain medication, especially for a small dog like yours. This shouldn’t be that painful after a day or so, just limit the walking to short potty walks only. My dog has a split nail. Should I go to the vet, groomer, or fix it?

Since it is not actively bleeding you can trim the nail yourself. It doesn't look that bad but you need to cut off the top part that is "hanging" or it will catch on things and could potentially cause more damage and pain to her. When you trim it, it may bleed so if you are not prepared for that at home then you should have your vet do it. A groomer may not be comfortable doing this but you can ask them. My dog's nail broke at the base and is bleeding. What should I do?

Hello. This is such a common injury in dogs. Veterinarians deal with this by cutting the nail at the break & then applying an antibiotic cream mixed with a little lidocaine to stop the pain. The foot stays bandaged for a couple of days until the sensitive tissue starts to heal. From here, the nail will begin to grow out & Jack will be back to his old self.
