My dog's dew claw is injured and dangly. Can I wait to see the vet?

Pet's info: Dog | Jack Russell Terrier | Male | unneutered | 2 years and 5 months old

My jack russle has caught his dew claw, it's not bleeding or anything but does look abit dangly, it is bothering him but he don't seem to be in bad pain, obviously he does need to see the vet I'm just wondering just how urgently and would he be suffering if we waited till Monday?

I think as long as you schedule a visit on Monday Bertie should be okay. I'd recommend getting a E-collar to prevent Bertie from licking the nail as this may result in infection. You can also soak the foot in a diluted chlorohexidine or diluted iodine solution and then rinse thoroughly.

If Bertie stops eating, acts lethargic, starts limping, or is obsessively trying to lick the nail then it would be better to get him to a veterinarian sooner. If he remains otherwise normal I think you are okay in waiting until Monday. Torn nails can be pretty painful, but please remember there are no safe over the counter pain medications for dogs so you will need a prescription from a vet for pain meds.

This will need to be examined by a veterinarian. Please make an appointment with your vet tomorrow. In thede meantime you can soak the paw with the dew claw in warm epsom salt solution to soothe it. This will also hopefully prevent any abscess from forming.

Poor Carl! Due to the swelling, which is an indication of infection, I would take him into the ER vet now. The nail will have to be removed, probably under sedation, and he will need antibiotics if the pad is infected (he may have introduced infection to the area with the licking). In my opinion, it's best to have him seen now instead of waiting until Monday.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Christian. I recommend that he sees his veterinarian. I am unable to tell from the pictures if an infection has developed around the nails causing the swelling or if he has a mass growing. The veterinarian will likely perform a procedure known as a fine needle aspirate. A small needle is used to collect a sample from the swelling to evaluate under the microscope. This will tell you to treat the problem. I hope this information helps!

Hello, and thanks for your question on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Poor Harley! Torn toe nails (including dew claws) are common injuries, and thankfully are not medical emergencies so she should be ok until morning. If you can see a nail that appears broken, sometimes soaking in an epsom salt bath for 5-10 minutes twice daily can a bit. You can either soak the affected paw in a little bucket of epsom water, or you can fill the tub 2-3 inches and have her stand in it. However, if any of this causes her stress or she resists it, then I wouldn't push it - she could get more hurt if she's struggling against you. Otherwise, I recommend keeping her on level ground when she needs to go outside, so she's not accidentally bending that nail, and keep her as quiet as possible until she can be seen by your vet. I do NOT recommend giving her anything for pain. None of our human medications are going to be safe or effective, and anything you give her could interfere with a better medication that your vet may want to prescribe. Hope this helps!

My puppy's missing nail is bleeding. What to do until the vet?

Hello. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. It is hard to give you much advice without seeing the nail. All I can tell you without a photo is that if you are worried you should take Chubbers to any vet that can fit you in now. Chances are he will be just fine until Monday. If your vet thinks he needs antibiotics they will prescribe them at that time. I doubt 2 days is going to make a huge difference. In the meantime you could soak the foot in an Epsom salt bath for 10 minutes, dry the foot well and then apply a thin layer of Neosporin. You can do this twice a day until you can get him to your vet. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

My dog's painful ingrown nail: Should I trim it or wait for the vet?

I would not try to clip it more and just leave it until Monday when you see the vet. Should it become very swollen and ooze pus or your dog whine a lot (pain) you should take Charlee to an emergency room where they will treat this according to the type of injury, give him some pain medicine and possibly antibiotics if there is infection.

If there is no active bleeding and he isn't extremely painful, then he can likely wait until later today. Waiting until tomorrow would not be recommended. Place an e-collar (cone) on Rufus to prevent licking. Crate him or restrict activity until he sees the vet. Do not give him anything for pain until you speak with your vet. Many OTC pain medications can be toxic to dogs.

Hello, thank you for your question about Baxter. Based on your description and the photo provided I believe that Baxter can wait until Monday to be seen by a veterinarian. In the meantime I would try to prevent him from licking at the area and try to keep it as clean as possible. If you have one you can use an e-collar to prevent him from getting at the area. Alternatively you could cover his foot with a sock (if you use this method try to keep the sock clean and dry, it may need to be changed). Additionally when Baxter goes outside I would recommend covering his foot (especially if the ground is wet) to prevent dirt and debris from getting to the area. You can use a plastic shopping bag or a bootie for this purpose. I would recommend scheduling an appointment with your veterinarian on Monday so that they can examine the area and determine if it is infected/irritated and prescribe Baxter any medications that they feel are warranted. There are two choices: 1) take your dog to the vet and have the ripped claw removed. 2) Observe and it may heal, but it also may get infected and then you would need to take your dog to the vet to have the claw removed.
