My dog ripped his toenail off. Is it serious? What should I do?

Ouch, poor Buster! This will be quite painful to him and is likely bleeding a lot. The problem with it is that it can become infected. I would apply gentle pressure to stop any bleeding, and then clean it with warm water and antiseptic soap. You may need to dip the area in styptic powder or corn starch to stop bleeding. I would bandage up this foot to keep it protected, and then put a sock over his foot to keep the bandage clean and dry. Put a plastic bag over the sock when Buster goes outside. You will likely need to put an Ecollar on him to keep him from chewing at the sock. You can buy one at a pet store, or you can make one at home. Keep an eye on the area, and if it appears red, swollen, warmth to the touch, or pus, then it's infected and Buster will need to see a vet.

If the toenail is not actively bleeding then you may not need to do anything else. The exposed quick can be painful so if you think Tank is painful you may want to see a vet for pain medication. Make sure Tank isn’t able to lick the nail to prevent infection and contact your vet if the nail base looks red or swollen.

If the nail has ripped off completely, as long as the bleeding has stopped, you can soak the foot in a solution of betadine and water (mix until you have a light brown solution) and do this 2-3 times daily for 10-15 minutes at a time. If at any time the area begins to look swollen or if there is pus present, I would have a veterinarian take a look at Coco so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. You can use both. A thin layer of iodine ointment will serve to help prevent infection. The Woun’ dres can be applied over it. If Caesar is likely to lick it, I recommend an e-collar. He may chew and eat a bandage if he isn’t wearing an e-collar. Bandages are also tricky because they can trap moisture and can tighten, cutting off circulation to the paw. I would continue applying both three times a day until the nail bed appears completely dry and scabbed over. It definitely appears to be torn at the fleshy part of the nail. These can sometimes be easily removed. You can try this at home if you are comfortable, but should be prepared for a lot of bleeding. Before you attempt that, I recommend you read the article at the link below. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! If you can remove the nail that is remaining, I would. You can cut the quick, too, if needed. If it bleeds, thickly apply something powdered, like corn starch or flour, to clot the blood. Then place a bandage over the nail for no longer than 24 hours. You MUST take the bandage off in 24 hours and do not place it tightly. If Rex is licking the area, he could cause an infection, so monitor for any swelling, discharge, or redness until the new nail grows. You can also soak the paw in an Epsom salt bath to soothe the area (make sure it is dry before applying the bandage). I cannot stress enough that he cannot wear the bandage longer than 24 hours. I think it would be best if you take him to the vet for a wound clean-up, and exam whether there is more than just a stripped nail. Your veterinarian will likely want to bandage the paw and give your dog pain medicine and an antibiotic so that the bacteria in that area cannot cause an infection.

It sounds like he tore off the nail. You can stop the bleeding using styptic powder, it’s what men use after cutting themselves shaving. I would get a cone to prevent licking, they should have them at Walmart or PetCo. I wouldn’t wrap the foot but soaking it in warm water to clean it after it stops bleeding will help prevent infection. Leaving it open to the air will let it dry and toughen up. There is no safe over the counter pain medication, especially for a small dog like yours. This shouldn’t be that painful after a day or so, just limit the walking to short potty walks only. My dog's dewclaw broke off and the quick is exposed. What should I do?

Ouch, poor Rupert! The quick itself should be left alone, but it appears in the picture that there is a long skinny piece of tissue or retained nail on the inner aspect of the quick. If that's the case, it will need to be trimmed back. If you're comfortable taking care of this yourself, you can trim that part back with a dog nail clippers (make sure you are comfortable with what you're doing and know what should and should not be trimmed - do NOT trim the quick itself as that would be very painfu for Rupert!). You can apply a gob of neosporin over the quick, and it may be helpful to cover that area with a clean sock for a few days, as the quick will be very tender, and will bleed easily. If you're not confident to do this yourself, bring Rupert in to the vet and they'll trim back any remaining nail tissue, and will likely apply medicated ointment and place a soft bandage. Monitor Rupert's nail bed over the coming week or two and make sure it is not getting red, swollen, or having discharge, which would indicate a nail bed infection requiring a vet visit and antibiotics.
