My dog has a torn nail. How can I treat it at home without a vet?

It definitely appears to be torn at the fleshy part of the nail. These can sometimes be easily removed. You can try this at home if you are comfortable, but should be prepared for a lot of bleeding. Before you attempt that, I recommend you read the article at the link below. You can keep it clean by flushing the foot with cool water for 10 minutes a day. You can also do a footbath with epsom salts for 15 minutes once a day.  I hope that helps and Blue gets better soon.

Not every torn toenail will bleed, but you did a great job caring for it at home. Keeping it clean is very important but you can only use peroxide once. From now on, you can use a mild soap to clean it if needed. Only continue to cover the area for 24 hours total. Any longer could delay healing and sometimes bandages can injure healthy tissue. I do recommend taking Sloane to a vet for pain medications. There is nothing safe over the counter that you can give pets for pain. This is not a weight bearing toe so she may not be in pain but anytime she catches the nail on something it’s going to cause some discomfort. They may also prescribe antibiotics however, keeping it clean and keeping Sloane from licking it will do the trick. The nail will grow back on its own, it will just take some time. Keep an eye on it and cut the sharp edges so it catches less. Good luck and kisses to Sloane!

It sounds like he tore off the nail. You can stop the bleeding using styptic powder, it’s what men use after cutting themselves shaving. I would get a cone to prevent licking, they should have them at Walmart or PetCo. I wouldn’t wrap the foot but soaking it in warm water to clean it after it stops bleeding will help prevent infection. Leaving it open to the air will let it dry and toughen up. There is no safe over the counter pain medication, especially for a small dog like yours. This shouldn’t be that painful after a day or so, just limit the walking to short potty walks only. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Max! if you are referring the the "thumb" nail that is the dew claw. If they tear or break that nail, the treatment is to cut it back to the pink vein or quick. If the nail has already been torn off to the pink vein and there isn't any residual nail hanging off then bandaging it for 3-5 days should be enough. Sometimes we do prescribe oral antibiotics and pain medications. The nail will grow back, which is a slow process. If there is still nail hanging on then it should be cut back as that is a constant source of pain. I wish Max the best!

If the nail is completely removed and exposing the nail bed, keep the toe as clean as possible to try to prevent infection. For my patients that have done this, I typically will place them on oral antibiotics and analgesics (pain medication) to prevent infection and keep them comfortable while the nail regrows. Some nails will not regrow normally if the nailbed was also injured. If Naria is limping on the affected paw, or the toe becomes swollen I would recommend having her seen by her veterinarian for appropriate medications to be dispensed.

If he starts limping or the toe becomes swollen, etc then you will need to get him to a vet at that time. I recommend you get this spray wound gel to apply to it (link below, use as directed). I would not do any vigorous cleaning as you may disrupt any blood clots that will then cause it to bleed. You can use both. A thin layer of iodine ointment will serve to help prevent infection. The Woun’ dres can be applied over it. If Caesar is likely to lick it, I recommend an e-collar. He may chew and eat a bandage if he isn’t wearing an e-collar. Bandages are also tricky because they can trap moisture and can tighten, cutting off circulation to the paw. I would continue applying both three times a day until the nail bed appears completely dry and scabbed over. You can place a toddler sock or a bootie over the paw when you take Caesar outside to pee and poop but I would avoid long walks for the next week. Good luck!
