My dog's toenail is broken and pulled. What to do until the vet opens?

It definitely appears to be torn at the fleshy part of the nail. These can sometimes be easily removed. You can try this at home if you are comfortable, but should be prepared for a lot of bleeding. You can keep it clean by flushing the foot with cool water for 10 minutes a day. You can also do a footbath with epsom salts for 15 minutes once a day.  I hope that helps and Blue gets better soon.

Ouch, poor Buster! This will be quite painful to him and is likely bleeding a lot. The problem with it is that it can become infected. I would apply gentle pressure to stop any bleeding, and then clean it with warm water and antiseptic soap. You may need to dip the area in styptic powder or corn starch to stop bleeding. I would bandage up this foot to keep it protected, and then put a sock over his foot to keep the bandage clean and dry. Put a plastic bag over the sock when Buster goes outside. You will likely need to put an Ecollar on him to keep him from chewing at the sock. You can buy one at a pet store, or you can make one at home. Poor Winston. If you have dog nail clippers, try to trim it back. Do it bit by bit, and avoid the quick. If he won't let you trim it, that means it's likely quite painful to him, so have him seen by the vet to have it treated. I hope this helps!

Poor Ruby. These can be really painful to dogs. This will have to be cut off, but I would not do it yourself because of the pain. Wrap a bandage around her paw to protect and cover it, then have her seen by a vet in the morning to have it treated. Cover the whole paw with the bandage. She may need to be sedated to have it removed, so don't feed her in the morning. I hope this helps!

That one will likely need to be clipped past the split to alleviate the pressure and pain. Because doing that can be painful and typically requires a bandage for the bleeding, your vet needs to do it so they can use sedation to control the pain! If it is not bleeding you can wait until the morning for your vet to open

All I can tell you without a photo is that if you are worried you should take Chubbers to any vet that can fit you in now. Chances are he will be just fine until Monday. If your vet thinks he needs antibiotics they will prescribe them at that time. I doubt 2 days is going to make a huge difference. In the meantime you could soak the foot in an Epsom salt bath for 10 minutes, dry the foot well and then apply a thin layer of Neosporin. I think as long as you schedule a visit on Monday Bertie should be okay. I'd recommend getting a E-collar to prevent Bertie from licking the nail as this may result in infection. You can also soak the foot in a diluted chlorohexidine or diluted iodine solution and then rinse thoroughly. If Bertie stops eating, acts lethargic, starts limping, or is obsessively trying to lick the nail then it would be better to get him to a veterinarian sooner. If he remains otherwise normal I think you are okay in waiting until Monday. Torn nails can be pretty painful, but please remember there are no safe over the counter pain medications for dogs so you will need a prescription from a vet for pain meds.
