Can eating tomato leaves affect a dog's blood sugar or cause diabetes?

The leaves of a tomato plant contain the glycoalkaloids alpha-tomatine and dehydrotomatine. These substances are toxic to both pets and people. If your cat or dog eats the leaves, he might experience lethargy, drooling, stomach upset, diarrhea, vomiting and changes in his behavior. Tremors or seizures could also occur. If you have observed or suspect your pup has munched on your tomato plants, it's best to get him to the vet so he can be treated. Poisoning is a serious situation and you should visit an emergency vet if your regular vet isn't available.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I would avoid tomatoe sauce that contains onions and garlic. There is no published “toxic” dose for tomatoes. Every dog is different on how they handle certain fruits and vegetables. I would start small and gradually increase the amount watching for tummy upset manifesting as vomit or diarrhea. I would feed as a treat only. Only feed ripe red tomoatoes. The plant and green tomatoes do contain solanine which is harmful. Everything should be in moderation. Onions and garlic are toxic to animals and I do not recommend any sauce contains those ingredients. Have a great day!

If your mom is feeding a prescription dog food for diabetes it will not harm another dog if ingested. If she is feeding a holistic diet unfortunately I cannot say for sure. However, garlic and butter both can affect her in different ways, especially by causing gastrointestinal symptoms like the vomiting. If you think she ate a large amount, she should be evaluated right away as that can be a significant toxicity. Also, begonias are very toxic to dogs sometimes resulting in kidney failure so if she ate any, she should be evaluated by a veterinarian as soon as possible. No, he cannot become diabetic or have high blood pressure problem but depending on the exact drugs and dosage it could cause him some short term problems such as low blood pressure and low blood sugar levels, if he seems lethargic you need to take him to the ER urgently.

Diabetes in dogs is often idiopathic (no underlying cause) and is just a genetic predisposition in dogs. It can sometimes be caused by eating fatty foods and being overweight often, but more often than not its genetic and breed specific in dogs. Cat diabetes is more often caused by being overweight. Since this is a supplement, then long term effects are minimal, but if wondering you should call the manufacturer of the supplement to ask for a list. Each manufacturer is different, so its best to go to the source with questions. : ) If your pet has an underlying cardiac disease, then that disease can lead to high blood pressure, so its best to get Chhutki's pressures checked regularly to determine if she needs additional regulating medication(s). I certainly understand Lily's fondness for bisuits and coffee. The short answer to your question is that I would not worry about her having a small amount of biscuit dunked in coffee. While we do see diabetes in dogs (which can be associated with blindness), the biggest risk factor for diabetes in dogs is being overweight. So just be sure to limit her calories and keep her a normal weight which I presume she currently is at 12 pounds. I would be careful with her with coffee. Certainly a bit of biscuit dunked in coffee is going to have very little coffee in it, but dogs are very sensitive to coffee and can have toxity to larger amounts, so I would be careful to keep your coffee cup away from her in case she develops a liking to that as well.
