My dog ate garlic butter and begonia leaves. Are they toxic?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Female | spayed | 7 years old | 9 lbs

My chihuahua ate garlic butter last night and threw up overnight a white vomit. This morning she went outside and started eating some leaves off of my begonias. Should I be worried?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! How much this can affect her will depend on how much she ate. However, garlic and butter both can affect her in different ways, especially by causing gastrointestinal symptoms like the vomiting. If you think she ate a large amount, she should be evaluated right away as that can be a significant toxicity. Also, begonias are very toxic to dogs sometimes resulting in kidney failure so if she ate any, she should be evaluated by a veterinarian as soon as possible. They may determine how much was eaten and see what needs to be done to help her. Good luck and have a great day! Hoping for a speedy recovery!
