My dog ate garlic butter and begonia leaves. Are they toxic?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Koda! My biggest concern is the butter more than the garlic especially now that she is vomiting. High amounts of fat can cause severe gastro-intestinal upset and/or pancreatitis. Pancreatitis can be mild (just vomiting, diarrhea, not eating) to very severe. Garlic causes oxidative damage to the red blood cells causing an anemia. A lot of it probably could cause stomach upset. Since it has been 12 hours and now she is coughing I would get her seen as soon as possible by your Vet. Good luck!

It is likely that she will be ok as there is likely not enough garlic in the amount she licked to cause serious life threatening side effects. You may see vomiting or diarrhea, but this should resolve after 24-48 hours. If Cuddles becomes lethargic, is vomiting blood, inappetant, etc. then I would recommend having her examined by a veterinarian. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction! However, in reality this should be a very small amount and he should be fine even without inducing vomiting as this was a very small amount. Good luck and have a great day!

I am sorry to hear about Snickers! Luckily an ingestion of this size is not a real concern for toxicity, so I would not worry about him eating this tiny piece of garlic bread. Garlic and onions can be toxic, but we only see these effects when ingested in large amounts.

Though more toxic in cats we can see symptoms in dogs from onions and garlic. Most commonly though we will see vomiting and diarrhea. More sever symptoms include abdominal pain, inappetance, collapse, increased heart rate, etc. I would monitor for the next 24 hours and feed a bland diet as outlined below. Feed this for the next 3-5 days and then transition back to the normal diet. If you notice any new symptoms, I would recommend having a veterinarian examine Falcon so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. I hope this helps! This may result though in gastrointestinal upset. Watch your pup for symptoms consistent with gastrointestinal upset such as vomiting, inappetence and/or diarrhea. This is likely not enough garlic to pose a serious risk of toxicity. At worst, you may see some mild stomach upset. Withhold food for 24 hours and feed a bland diet in small, frequent amount until symptoms resolve.
