My dog ate coffee-soaked biscuits. Will she get diabetes or go blind?

My 18 month old Cavalier loves to eat my biscuits that I dunk in my coffee. I've been told it can cause diabetes and blindness. Is this true as I don't want this to happen to my companion. I am worried

I certainly understand Lily's fondness for bisuits and coffee. The short answer to your question is that I would not worry about her having a small amount of biscuit dunked in coffee. While we do see diabetes in dogs (which can be associated with blindness), the biggest risk factor for diabetes in dogs is being overweight. So just be sure to limit her calories and keep her a normal weight which I presume she currently is at 12 pounds.
I would be careful with her with coffee. Certainly a bit of biscuit dunked in coffee is going to have very little coffee in it, but dogs are very sensitive to coffee and can have toxity to larger amounts, so I would be careful to keep your coffee cup away from her in case she develops a liking to that as well. As with most things in life, it is all amount moderation.

I am sorry to hear about your concern for Sophie. I would recommend watching her closely tonight for signs of toxicity from the coffee. Hopefully she just ingested a small amount and will have no ill effects, but you want to watch for vomiting, diarrhea, hyperactivity/excitability, racing heart, tremors/muscle twitching, and seizures. If any of these occur, then take Sophie in to the vet (vomiting and diarrhea if just occurring a few times may not require emergency care, but repeated vomiting or the other symptoms listed would warrant an emergency trip visit).

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Trixie should be fine! This amount of chocolate even if it was dark or milk chocolate isn't toxic. She could have tummy upset from the other parts of the biscuit so feeding her a bland diet for a few days isn't wrong. I wish you and Trixie the best!

There is no such thing as a stupid question! You are correct - coffee is toxic to dogs due to the caffeine present and potential for heart side effects. However, the minimal amount of dry coffee that Nova may have licked from your hands is negligible and will not cause any side effects. She should be perfectly fine! :-)

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I am sorry to hear Bella isn't feeling well. There is likely not enough chocolate in the cookies to cause chocolate toxicity (also since she is a large dog). However, even if it was too much chocolate, it is already past the point of being able to decontaminate her (remove the toxins). I suspect she isn't felling well because of stomach upset (diarrhea) from eating the cookies. I would recommend feeding her a bland diet for 2-3 days (boiled chicken and boiled rice) then transition her back to her normal diet. If that doesn't help, I would recommend taking her to a vet to make sure there is nothing else going on. Good luck and kisses to Bella!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Since Mulan is 75 lbs there is likely not enough chocolate in the cookies to cause toxicity. But that amount of cookies could cause tummy upset or pancreatitis. If Mulan starts vomiting, having diarrhea or won't eat then make an appointment with your Vet. I hope this helps and good luck!
