My dog was stung by a fly. What symptoms should I watch for?

Hi there. Bee stings can be serious if the dog happens to be allergic, just like in people - but the vast majority of the time, they don't cause any major problems at all :) Many dogs like to catch bees and swallow them, and I very rarely see any significant issues related to this. If Dutch is acting normal, there should be no cause for concern. Signs of a possible allergic reaction would include facial swelling, difficulty breathing, vomiting, or weakness or collapse. If you see any of these signs, then I would take him to a veterinarian right away. Otherwise, you can just monitor him for the next few hours to make sure everything is okay.

Allergic reactions typically present signs within 15-30 minutes. Since an hour has passed with no indication of a reaction, that is a very good sign. I would say that if by the completion of the second hour, your pup is still normal, you are likely safe. It is great that you are taking such good care of her. Frenchies are the cutest!!

I would just monitor the paw for now. You can apply an ice pack for 5-10 minutes 2-3 times per day to help with the discomfort or reduce any swelling that may occur. If Diva begins to have any other symptoms such as breathing difficulties, swelling of the face, etc. I would recommend getting her examined by a veterinarian for further treatment. Ouch, poor Bongo! You did the right thing by taking out the stinger. Put a cold compress on it for five minutes at a time to help with the pain and swelling. Keep an eye on him. If his paw starts swelling despite the cold compress, he gets hives, he is in pain, or you see signs of anaphylactic shock, rush him into an ER vet immediately. Best of luck, I hope this helps!

If the symptoms don't seem to bad and if he isn't lethargic or having problems breathing just wait 2-3 hours, it should start getting better by then. in any case of respiratory problems or lethargy you must take him to the vet urgently.

Check the inside of Jack's mouth (cheeks, outside of the gums, inner part of the gums, roof of the mouth, the tongue). A sting could cause these symptoms, as well as chewing on something sharp or foul tasting. If Jack seems comfortable for the rest of the day and eats dinner without issues, then I would think he is fine. If he doesn't feel like eating, if you see a wound in the mouth, or if you notice that the mouth, tongue, or muzzle starts to swell, then he should be examined by a vet right away.

If you are not seeing any swelling or irritation then she is likely fine. Occasionally you will see a delayed reaction where swelling can manifest hours later. Just keep an eye on her for the next couple hours.
