My dog stepped in turpentine. His paws hurt. What should I do?

If there was to be a problem, it would typically show up within 2-12 hours after exposure. If you see depression, weakness, incoordination, muscle tremors, salivation, vomiting, a skin rash, or collapse, get him into a vet immediately. I'd monitor him for the time period I mentioned above, but after that time period passes and if there are no signs, he should be ok. I hope this helps!

You aren't a terrible person! We all make mistakes :-) I would make sure to wash Tim's foot thoroughly with dawn dish soap and warm water to get any trace of the paint stripper off his foot. You do not want him ingesting it by licking at his food. Get his foot a long soak and a full scrub to make sure all of the paint stripper is gone.

Hello, its unlikely that the paw fragrance was absorbed into his system. If it was, you should monitor for any signs of illness which may include vomiting, diarrhea, a decreased appetite, lethargy, disorientation, or seizure like activity. It is likely sufficient to since his paws thoroughly or give him a foot bath to remove any left over topical fragrance. Otherwise, you can continue to apply the new product. Poor guy. The paw is likely having an severe inflammatory response from the pine needle, and potentially an abscess has formed here. If this is an abscess (bacterial infected pocket), then it needs to be drained by your vet and then Diesel needs to be placed on oral antibiotics, and pet friendly anti-inflammatory medication to get this to heal. Applying topical Neosporin and hydrogen peroxide will not likely cause this to resolve unforutnately. In fact, hydrogen peroxide shouldn't be used, because in pets it can cause the normal skin cells to die off. I would recommend taking him in by tomorrow at the latest to get this treated appropriately. I hope that Diesel is able to make a full and speedy recovery. Take care.

It can be toxic to dogs, but luckily it takes a lot to cause toxic effects and the toxic effects are usually limited to vomiting and diarrhea. I wouldn't worry too much unless they are starting to vomit. It's also good to rinse them off with normal water for 10 minutes, because it can be irritating to their skin. If your dog smells strongly of paraffin or petrol you need to wash your dog with dishwashing soap to wash off any residue. Observe the bite for infection or pus, and if it looks angry, painful and infected, you need to take your dog to a vet.

You can clean it daily with a diluted Betadine or chlorhexidine (Hibiclens) solution and dry it thoroughly afterwards. Anything you apply will likely be lucked off unless you use an e-collar. It may have been abraded on rough surfaces inside or outside his enclosure. Since he is limping, he is likely painful and should be seen by your veterinarian. Pain medication can be administered or dispensed if indicated. If possible, the paw should be protected until it heals. This may require a bandage/bootie, coming indoors, an e-collar (cone) or a combination of the three. Your veterinarian can determine the best course of treatment after an exam.
