My dog got tea tree oil on his paw. Should I worry about toxicity?

HI, thanks for using PetCoach! Poor Honey! Tea tree oil is toxic at high concentrations. If you washed it off and she hasn't licked it and is acting fine she will be ok. Watch her for lethargy or neurologic signs. if she isn't showing symptoms there is nothing to do preventatively. I would try a triple antibiotic on the wound and an antihistamine. Hello, its unlikely that the paw fragrance was absorbed into his system. If it was, you should monitor for any signs of illness which may include vomiting, diarrhea, a decreased appetite, lethargy, disorientation, or seizure like activity. It is likely sufficient to since his paws thoroughly or give him a foot bath to remove any left over topical fragrance. Otherwise, you can continue to apply the new product. You are right that tea tree oil is toxic to dogs. You need to bathe Lucy immediately. Wash her thoroughly with dog shampoo or baby shampoo, wash it out, and bathe her again. As long as you get it all off of her before it has a chance to soaking into her skin, she should be fine. I hope this helps!

Giving them a bath is the best thing to strip their coats and skin if the oil. Make sure you used dawn dish soap as this cuts grease and oil based products very well. Since little got absorbed due to the timely baths, they are unlikely to show any ill effects. Monitor for any vomiting or shaking.

The toxic effect of turpentine is very similar to petroleum hydrocarbon toxicosis. That is a severe and disease-like reaction that occurs when a dog is exposed to refined petroleum oil products, or ingests products of this type. I would recommend to take your dog to your veterinarian especially if you suspect he may have licked or ingest as well the turpentine. He will be bathed at the hospital, and possibly given topical antibiotics (and antinflammatories or pain killers) to prevent infection of the skin due to irritation. Your veterinarian will assess as well any other lesion that may be present in the oral cavity and tongue.

I would wash the tea tree oil off of her immediately with dishwashing detergent (which is good removing oils from the skin) and take her to the ER or call the ASPCA poison control hotline if it was 100% tea tree oil which can be very toxic and cause seizures, vomiting, tremors. 0.1-1% tea tree oil is much less toxic but calling poison control and giving them your dog’s weight, the type and amount of tea tree oil and how long ago it was applied (there is usually a fee) 888-426-4435 is your safest bet especially as she is pregnant.
