What causes sneezing and eye discharge in my dog? Is it serious?

Allergies in dogs typically present as skin irritation with itching, but some dogs also have intestinal inflammation as a result of food allergies, or respiratory changes, but the respiratory changes/sneezing are less common. If Bear has only been sneezing with clear nasal discharge, and his skin looks normal and he has not been itching, I would think allergies are less likely. Most dogs sneeze as a result of nasal irritation, infection, foreign bodies, etc. If Bear's nasal discharge is yellow or green, or he has not been eating, drinking or acting normally, he needs to be seen by his vet. Otherwise, monitor his sneezing for changes and take him to his vet if it gets worse.

Hello. Sugar may have a mild upper respiratory infection. If she is eating well & is acting, playing normally, just take a little warm water & clean the eye as necessary. If you notice this eye to be redder than the other one, &/or she seems to be squinting with that eye, then there could be some conjunctivitis going on & she may need to be examined. Labs are famous for picking up tiny foreign bodies underneath their third eyelid. This can cause pretty intense irritation, so if her eye does not seem to be improving over the next few days, or the discharge intensifies, please contact your veterinarian. Poor guy. If the discharge is a yellow or green color and his sclera (white part of the eye) is red and irritated then he probably has an eye infection and is in need of topical antibiotics prescribed by your local veterinarian. This breed is also high risk for "Dry eye" (KCS-keratoconjunctivitis sicca) which will result in clear or white discharge initially, that can later turn to an infection. This condition is diagnosed with a simple tear production test through your vet and then Bear would need prescription medication (i.e. Cylclosporine) +/- artificial tears to treat this. If Bear has other symptoms (i.e. vomiting, decreased appetite, etc) and eye discharge, then this is probably a weepy eye that is secondary to another underlying condition. More information would be needed to know what other conditions may be the cause of his illness. So it is best to schedule an appointment for Bear so that you can get him properly diagnosed and treated for his current eye condition. I wish Bear the best moving forward with his eye issues and hope he gets some relief soon.

Handsome boy! He may have allergies from spring pollen or a mild cold. You can give Benadryl to reduce the nasal discharge and itching. There is a section on this website with information and dosages of common over the counter medications that are safe for dogs. if he stops eating, the discharge gets green or he's very lethargic then I would recommend a veterinary exam. Poor Wyatt! Cloudy discharge from the eyes and nose is usually caused by some type of upper respiratory infection. It sounds like he will probably need antibiotics to treat the problem, so I would recommend taking him to the vet for an exam today if possible. In the meantime, you can use a warm washcloth or cotton ball to gently wipe away the discharge as often as needed. This will not treat the underlying problem, but may help to make him a bit more comfortable until you are able to see the vet.

It sounds like Bailey may have a minor respiratory infection or allergies - both of these are common causes of a runny nose and sneezing in dogs. In most cases, this problem will resolve on its own so as long as he is eating and drinking fine, active, and not having any other symptoms, it should be okay to monitor him at home for the next few days. You can try bringing him into the bathroom with you with the door closed while you take a hot shower, if you like - the steam and humidity will often help to relieve nasal congestion and temporarily improve his symptoms. If the discharge becomes yellow or green in color, or if he begins acting lethargic or not wanting to eat, I would recommend having him examined by a vet as he may need prescription antibiotics to treat the infection.

Poor Link. He could have a respiratory infection or it could be he is suffering an allergic reaction. I would take him into a vet first thing in the morning. The vet can diagnose what is causing his symptoms, and can treat him. Best of luck.
