Why does my dog have a snotty nose and milky eye discharge?

If his symptoms persist, he will need to see his veterinarian as he may require an antibiotic. Seasonal allergies could also cause these symptoms and rarely an infected tooth could do the same. Poor Jake. If the snot is green or yellow in color then he will need to see a vet because this is an upper respiratory secondary bacterial infection. A short course of antibiotics should clear this up as long as he doesn't have any other complications. If he is having a hard time breathing you can use a humidifier or place him in the bathroom with the shower running for about 10 minutes to help moisturizer his nasal passage and break up some of the mucous until you can get him seen by your vet. Also offering him slightly warmed cans of wet dog food can entice him to eat if his appetite has decreased somewhat. After he is better I would make it a point to get his Bordetella vaccine done every 6 months to help protect him from upper respiratory infections in the future. Poor girl. White discharge from the eyes can indicate either a dry eye conditon or the beginning of an allergic conjunctivitis (allergies causing inflammation of the eyes). If she is also sneezing and rubbing her eyes from irritation, then chances are she has allergic conjunctivitis. You can discuss with your vet about trying some over the counter or vet prescribed antihistamine medication to try and help with this. Your vet may want to examine her first just to make sure we are on the right track with her diagnosis and treatment recommendations. In the meantime I would continue to apply warm compresses on her eyelids (while holding them closed) and Henry cleansing the discharge as needed to prevent irritation around her eyes. Hi. It sounds like Mayor has an upper respiratory infection. These can be caused by viruses, bacterial, or fungal infections. There isn't anything unfortunately from home that would cure it or treat it. That would have to come from your veterinarian. This evening you can close a small bathroom door, turn on shower as hot as possible, get the room very steamy/humid, and place him in that bathroom with the steam for 10 min 2-3 times a day. This isn't treating the infection, but helps break up mucous to make him more comfortable. Good luck.

It could be that Luke has an upper respiratory infection causing the nasal discharge. I would try putting him in a room with a humidifier or bringing him into the bathroom with you when you take a shower to see if the steam helps with any congestion he may have. Make sure he is eating and keeping warm, and have him seen by a vet tomorrow if the nasal discharge continues.

Poor Daisy. If the discharge is just clear and not yellow or green, then this is likely a sign of allergic rhinitis. Something in the environment is causing her to have an allergic inflammatory response in her nasal passages. However, as long as the discharge remains clear she may get over this on her own over the next few weeks. Monitor her daily for any changes and have her seen by your veterinarian if things get worse (sneezing, infection type discharge, decreased appetite, etc). But hopefully she won't need to be seen and she improves on her own.
