My old dog has itchy nose, sneezing, clear discharge. What to do?

Pawing at the nose could be allergies but it could be that he has something going on inside his mouth. Since he has some eye discharge too I'd say allergies are high on the list. Could just be seasonal allergies and will go away on their own. You can try giving him some Benadryl for a few days to see if the symptoms get better. The dose is 1mg/# of body weight so a 50# dog would get 50mg (2 of the 25mg human capsules). You can give it twice a day. If you do this consistently and there is no change in 4-5 days then you can just stop - that means it's not working. If you notice it's helping you can continue giving it but just be aware that if you give it constantly they often build up a tolerance and then you'll notice it stops working. Poor Noodle. It looks like the discharge is a whitish grey color which means it is likely allergy related. I would try some benadryl twice a day to see if that helps. If it isn't improving, it gets worse, he starts quinting, or the discharge is yellow/green, I would have your vet take a look as he will likely need some antibiotic drops. What a cutie pie! I would try putting a humidifier in the room with him overnight or putting him in the bathroom while you run a steamy shower for 10-15 minutes to provide some beneficial moisture to his airways. If he develops discharge from the nose, coughing, eye discharge, decreased appetite, decreased energy these would be reasons to seek veterinary care. You can ask your vet if it would be ok to give him an antihistamine such as Benadryl or Zyrtec to see if it could be allergy related as well. We do use these drugs in dogs, but I always recommend checking with your vet before starting any new medication.

Hello. Benadryl will not help the runny nose in your puppy as she may have a mild upper respiratory infection. If she is eating & drinking well, playful & active, this will probably resolve on its own. The itchy skin might be from fleas, or mites. Make sure you are treating her with an age appropriate flea product & if she continues to itch, I would dip her once a week in a Lime Sulfur product that you can purchase on-line or at most Tractor Supply stores. This would be much better than Benadryl. If the nasal discharge turns thick or your puppy seems unwell, please see your veterinarian as soon as possible. Saline nasal spray can help moisten the nasal passages. This needs to be 100% saline with no decongestants. If the nasal discharge persists, I would recommend having buddy looked at by a veterinarian to make sure this is not infectious or due to something else such as dry eye that needs different treatment. You spelled it just right! The discharge does look like it's clear, so it could be allergy related like your vet suggested earlier. Seeing if your vet can prescribe a medication to treat allergies may help improve his symptoms. If this has been going on for several days without any improvement, I would recommend having a veterinarian examine Ivy so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. She may or may not need an antibiotic if this is an upper respiratory infection.
