My dog has allergies and is sneezing for 5 days. What should I do?

If his symptoms persist, he will need to see his veterinarian as he may require an antibiotic. Seasonal allergies could also cause these symptoms and rarely an infected tooth could do the same. If he's acting fairly normal otherwise (eating and drinking fine, active, etc.) you could opt to monitor him for now and see how things go for the next few days. The problem may resolve on its own, similar to when we get a minor cold or allergy flare-up. If there is no improvement in the next 2-3 days, or if your pup develops other symptoms such as coughing, thick green or yellow nasal discharge, or begins acting very lethargic or not eating, then I would recommend having him seen by a veterinarian for treatment.

It sounds like Bailey may have a minor respiratory infection or allergies - both of these are common causes of a runny nose and sneezing in dogs. In most cases, this problem will resolve on its own so as long as he is eating and drinking fine, active, and not having any other symptoms, it should be okay to monitor him at home for the next few days. You can try bringing him into the bathroom with you with the door closed while you take a hot shower, if you like - the steam and humidity will often help to relieve nasal congestion and temporarily improve his symptoms. If the discharge becomes yellow or green in color, or if he begins acting lethargic or not wanting to eat, I would recommend having him examined by a vet as he may need prescription antibiotics to treat the infection.

Periodic sneezing can just be a sign of allergic rhinitis, especially if he is otherwise eating well and behavior hasn't changed. Contact your vet to see if there are some antihistamines that can be tried for now, then continue to monitor him to see if the sneezing improves over the next few days. If this has been going on for several days without any improvement, I would recommend having a veterinarian examine Ivy so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. She may or may not need an antibiotic if this is an upper respiratory infection. If she has not had an antihistamine before, you can always try Benadryl or Zyrtec but I would discuss this with your vet first. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. I would recommended Kaya see her veterinarian for an exam so her vet can determine whether or not she has an infection or whether it is just caused by an allergy and to determine what treatment may be most appropriate. Handsome boy! He may have allergies from spring pollen or a mild cold. You can give Benadryl to reduce the nasal discharge and itching. There is a section on this website with information and dosages of common over the counter medications that are safe for dogs. if he stops eating, the discharge gets green or he's very lethargic then I would recommend a veterinary exam.
