My dog keeps sneezing after vet visits. What are my other options?

If you haven't already tried it I would recommend a trial of antibiotics and antihistamines to rule out allergies and infection in the nose. If you have already done this then it may be time to refer to an internal medicine specialist since your vet has already done a thorough work up and could not determine the cause of the problem. The specialist could do a CT scan of the head/nose or a scope of the nose (where they look up the nose with a special camera) to see what exactly is going on.

I am sorry to hear about your kitty. I would consider some diagnostics since Anna has not improved on the medication trials performed thus far. Dental x-rays would be my next step, to ensure there isn't an infected tooth root that could be causing these issues. It is not always obvious looking in the oral cavity that a tooth is diseased. The x-ray may also help detect any bony changes in the skull that could occur with certain types of tumors. Other options you may discuss with your vet would include antihistamine trials, a drug called Cerenia which can be used to formulate nose drops that can decrease inflammation in the nasal passages, a nasal flush and culture to check for resistant bacteria or fungus, and prophylactic treatment for possible nasal mites. CT scan is also recommended in nonresponsive cases when other options have been exaughsted. You may also consider referral to an internist if your vet is having trouble finding a cause/treatment that works. She could have a grass seed stuck in her nose, or it may have been stuck and moved on but caused irritation. The nose is biggeer than you think so often the endoscope is needed to have a good look and temive anything stuck. I would make her a appointment at the vet as it will likely come to that. If discharge is clear it couldnt have been stuck long as usually foreign mayerial causes an infection. If you want to try something first yku could get a syringe of saline (boil kettle, let cool add a little salt) and gently flush her nose. Do it slowly so that she does not choke on the water, she will swallow it. She may not tolerate this and if not do not persist as you could hurt her. If she lets you this may dislodge what is stuck or give the cavity a good rinse. If this doesnt resolve the issue it is time for the vet.

This is very important as I am afraid this could either be a nasal cancer or possibly a severe nasal fungal infection. I am sorry to hear about Lily. These can be very frustrating cases. Sometimes nasal saline drops can be helpful if your pet will tolerate these. Another off-label product we find helpful in some cases is a nasal drop made using the drug Cerenia. You could ask your vet if they offer this or can research how to mix it up. In some cases we may also recommend additional testing such as scoping, dental X-ray, or CT.

It’s possible that he’s got rhinitis, which can be caused by an allergic type reaction, an infection, or even an auto-immune type condition where the nasal passages become inflamed for no reason. A foreign body (such as a grass seed) would also be possible, as would a nasal tumor. A rhinoscopy (scope of the nose) and biopsy may be needed for a diagnosis and to determine the best treatments. The big question is the nasal discharge, especially the bloody one is it from one nostril or is it from both? If it is from one then I highly recommend going for advanced imaging of Max's nose.
