My dog is a chronic snuffler. How can I clear her nasal goop?

I am so sorry to hear that Mary Jane has this problem. Has she been treated for nasal mites? It is an uncommon problem but definitely worth a trial therapy prior to a CT. I also will typically perform a nasal flush under anesthesia before a CT as well. A nasal flush can help dislodge an object - I have found charcoal, carrot, grass, and foxtails on nasal flushes. She definitely could have inhaled an object with her head out the car window such as in your picture. Should these therapies not provide any improvement, then I would proceed with a CT at that time. This must be really frustrating for you! Since four different antibiotics did not improve Skye's condition, I would think that her nasal discharge is either not due to bacterial causes or is a highly antibiotic resistant bacterium. Other causes of nasal discharge can include fungal infections, viruses, masses in the nasal cavity, presence of foreign material (I once saw carpet fibers cause nasal issues!), etc. Unfortunately, I don't think there are any at home remedies that will help Skye. At this point, I would recommend having your vet recheck her and consider x-rays or a nasal culture as the next diagnostic steps.

Saline nasal spray can help moisten the nasal passages. This needs to be 100% saline with no decongestants. If the nasal discharge persists, I would recommend having buddy looked at by a veterinarian to make sure this is not infectious or due to something else such as dry eye that needs different treatment. I am sorry Snoopy is having this issue. It definitely can be a cold but there are other things it can be. It can be allergies or if it is one nostril that there is discharge it can be a growth. I recommend taking Snoopy to the veterinarian and having them listen to her to make sure there is nothing settled in her lungs and it is just an upper respiratory issue. I recommend purchasing a basket muzzle either from amazon or from your local pet store and scheduling an appointment with your vet. That much thick nasal discharge definitely indicates either a bacterial or viral respiratory infection that can possibly lead to pneumonia (expensive/difficult to treat and possibly life threatening) if not treated early. Your vet may write a script for Xanax and dispense trazadone to be given prior to the appointment. Good luck! Keno is a good looking shepherd!

I am so sorry to hear about Savannah. You can try using nasal saline drops to help loosen the mucus (like Little Noses for infants). You can use that 2-3 times per day as needed. I hope this helps. Kisses to Savannah!

You could put him in a steamy bathroom or a room with a humidifier/vaporizer and see if that helps moisten any secretions and relieve the congestion. You could also try a saline nasal spray. Otherwise, he needs to be examined by a vet to determine the cause and treat. He may need an antibiotic and/or other medications and your vet can prescribe.
