If the nasal discharge continues, especially only on one side, I would be concerned about a possible foreign body in his sinus cavity or even something like cancer. The next step if not already done would be lab test, potential he a CT scan of his skull or/and even a rhinoscopy where we put a camera up his nose to examine for anything. Your veterinarian can determine with you which of those steps would be best suited are even available in your area.

Hello. Your Leo may have a mild upper respiratory infection, or he may have inhaled some foreign substance that made its way into the sinuses. Pieces of grass, seeds or awns all can inadvertently work their way up. If there is no excessive sneezing, you can give this a day or so to see if he can move out a possible irritant, but if it worsens or the discharge turns bloody, or he also develops a discharge from the eye(s), please see your veterinarian at your earliest convenience. This could be a fungal infection or an antibiotic resistant bacterial infection. If bacterial and fungal cultures have not yet been performed, I would recommend that you request them. I would also suggest a consultation with a veterinary internist for a rhinoscopy with possible biopsies. You can find one in your area on www.acvim.org.

Poor Roxy! I can definitely see the dry discharge from both nostrils. You’re right in saying that this can be caused by an upper respiratory infection. In most cases these infections cannot be transmitted to people or from people to dogs. These are very common in dogs, and can easily be treated with antibiotics prescribed by a veterinarian. Unfortunately, nasal discharge can be caused by several other diseases such as a nasal foreign body or mass, or even pneumonia. Your vet can do some blood work and x-rays to determine the exact cause of Roxy’s nasal discharge. You should have her seen immediately if she begins acting lethargic, loses her appetite, or you believe she’s having trouble breathing.

It sounds like a respiratory infection, it could be kennel cough or a similar type of infection. you should take him back to the vet in order to start him on an antibiotic course ASAP. you shouldn't be worried regarding catching an infection from him though, it is very rare for a human to catch a respiratory infection from a dog, they do not tend to get those infection from viruses/bacterias that affect humans.

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. If a runny nose is returning after a course of antibiotics has stopped there is concern for a foreign object stuck in the nose. Another course of antibiotics won't help. The best thing to do would be to scope or flush the nose to see if anything comes out, or to get a sample. Fungal disease is common in the US as well and is a consideration of cause. I would recommend a revisit with your vet. You can discuss allergies at that time as well, as a runny nose can be caused by allergies. Best of luck with Olive!

HI there, I am sorry to hear that Ruffo is experiencing sneezing and nasal congestion. This could most commonly be caused by something like kennel cough or an upper respiratory infection, but also be caused by something mechanical, like a grass seed stuck in the nose.
