My dog has bloody nose, eye swelling, antibiotics failed. What now?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Neo! I am concerned about the swelling on her nose. Since she isn't responding to antibiotics I would worry that she has a tooth root abscess, a nasal tumor or a fungal infection in her nasal cavity. I would do full blood work and then sedated her to take skull X-rays and X-ray the teeth on that side of her face. I hope this helps and I wish Neo the very best!

I'm sorry Mickey isn't doing well! Yes, I agree the next step is to have the interior of his nose examined to see if he has a fungal infection, foreign body, or tumor causing this constant blocked nose. He can be well sedated so they can look up his nose, and I would recommend doing it. You have tried antibiotics without success and further testing is needed.

Judging from the pictures, I would be suspicious that this is an abscess / infection or a nasal / sinus tumor. If this is a tumor, it may have developed a secondary infection, which is why it likely responded to the previous treatment. Unfortunately I do not have an answer for you on what this is other than it would need further testing such as rhinoscopy or CT scan to help determine what this could be. If you are unable to do further testing, I would consider continuing the antibiotics / steroids long term to help keep Luna comfortable. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. I think you need to get a second opinion from another vet, preferably one who has a rhinoscope and can actually look into your dog's upper respiratory passages. By examining the nasal passages with a rhinoscope one will be able to see whether there is a tumor present or more plant debris or foreign material that may need to be removed and so stop the constant infections and bleeding. Your vet may be able to refer you to a relevant clinic.

The big question is the nasal discharge, especially the bloody one is it from one nostril or is it from both? If it is from one then I highly recommend going for advanced imaging of Max's nose. In a 10 year old cat, it's certainly possible that your cat has a tumor. Given that he has been having continuing problems with this swelling, I recommend having further testing done such a blood tests, urinalysis, and x-rays of his head. This will help vet see if there is a tumor in his nasal cavity, and then the vet can discuss treatment options.

However, I think a fungal infection like cryptococcus seems more likely and that would only respond to anti-fungal therapy. Another possibility is cancer such as squamous cell carcinoma. I recommend you consider having him reevaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. May be a biopsy could be done at this time since it has not improved.
