My dog ate ibuprofen and vomited. What symptoms should I watch for?

Poor Ben! Black stool can indicate that he has blood in his stool due to intestinal bleeding or ulcerations caused by the Ibuprofen. He probably had normal bloodwork on Friday because Ibuprofen (NSAID) can cause delayed problems (kidney, liver, GI ulcerations and GI bleeding) for up to 72 hrs after ingestion. With that said I would highly recommend taking Ben in to your local ER clinic right away for medical treatment. The vet will likely give him IV fluid therapy (to help preserve kidney function), repeat his bloodwork, give medications to treat GI ulcers, and GI coating medication (Sucralfate). Hi there. We can see serious GI side effects, including stomach ulcers and internal bleeding, at ibuprofen doses over 50 mg/kg. If Dubs is 35 pounds and may have ingested 1200 mg of ibuprofen, this would be about 75 mg/kg - so yes, he would be at risk of developing some serious problems. I would recommend taking him to the vet today for an exam. The veterinarian may recommend checking some lab work to see if there is any evidence of bleeding in his stomach, and will probably prescribe medication to help protect his stomach lining for the next few days until the ibuprofen is out of his system.

Ibuprofen intoxication can cause stomach upset, ulceration in the stomach and, if ingested in larger amounts, problems with kidneys. Typically, the symptoms occur within 24-48hrs from ibuprofen ingestion, so if you dog ate the pill 5 days ago, most likely everything is fine. As long as she is not having any gastrointestinal signs at present (no vomiting, no blood in stools, good appetite) and she is passing urine as normal, most likely there is nothing to worry about.

Since you managed to go take her to a vet right away and he she had the proper treatment there is a good chance that she will be ok. You will find out next week when you take her to your own vet for some blood tests checking her kidneys and liver. If those are normal then she did not get damaged by the Ibuprofen.

Oh no, that's not good. One 200mg tablet can be sufficient to cause symptoms of ibuprofen toxicity in dogs. Typically you can see signs of toxicity within an hour, so if it was yesterday and Jax is acting normally, he may be ok. To help with the constipation, feed him canned food and add water to it.

I would check the rest of the packet to see if he has eaten any others - simply having one in his mouth but not ingesting/swallowing it would not cause any significant effects (other than oral irritation if he chewed into the bitter center) but if such a small dog did consume whole tablets there would be a potential for toxic effects and rapid decontamination would be recommended

Hello. Ingesting ibuprofen over 25 mg/kg can cause significant gastrointestinal signs. Sable ingested the equivalent of 33mg/kg, so she could have some issues. See hoe she is in the morning, & try to have her seen. She may just be placed on a stomach protectant for a few days just to make sure she stays well.
