My dog is in pain. Is it safe to give her Motrin before the vet?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund miniature | Female | spayed | 7 years and 4 months old | 15.6 lbs

For Minnie how many milgrams of Motrin can I give her? I am taking her to the vet in a few hours but in the meantime can I give her Motrin?

NOOOO!! Do not give any Motrin!! I don't know why you want to give this but if you are going to take her to the vet you do not want to mask any signs that the vet may need to make a diagnosis. Also, the vet will want to give you a different kind of anti-inflammatory and that will react with the Motrin. Motrin (ibuprofen) has a VERY narrow safety margin so just the tiniest bit of overdose can be life-threatening.

Please don't give her any medications and just wait until you get her to the vet for an exam.

I hope this helps. Best wishes!
